Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, provides direct patient care. Assesses patients’ condition, performs treatments, administers drugs, observes patients’ progress, records responses/reactions to interventions, and evaluates therapies for clinical outcomes and effectiveness. Works collaboratively with all members of the health care team, the patient and the patient’s family/significant others. Practices in accordance with Winchester Hospital’s policies and procedures and the scope of practice for Registered Nurses in Massachusetts.

- As required, maintain current license, life support certification, and tuberculosis testing.
- Takes responsibility for own safety as well as the safety of patients, patients’ family, co-workers, physicians and other customers.
- Utilises the nursing process to provide patient care.
- Assesses the patient using methods such as observation, interview, and review of clinical data.
- Develops individualized plan of care based on assessment and in conjunction with physician orders to achieve desired outcomes.
- Implements plan of care.
- Directs licensed and unlicensed personnel to implement plan of care.
- Utilises the results of evidence-based research to improve clinical outcomes.
- Provides patient/family education to effect desired clinical outcomes.
- Reports pertinent patient assessment data, plan of care and response to unlicensed personnel, physicians, nurse manager, and other health care team members.
- Documents patient care in the inter-operative record.
- Participates in interdisciplinary patient care discussions.
- Communicates with other health care team members to resolve operational problems and deliver quality patient care.
- Provides a safe environment for the patient during the peri-operative period.
- Provides equipment and supplies based on patient needs.
- Demonstrates a thorough working knowledge of aseptic technique and its applications.
- Creates and maintains a sterile field.
- Exhibits circulating and scrubbing capabilities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the physiological, pathophysiological and anatomical aspects of the surgical procedures assigned.
- Provides assistance to the surgeon and anesthesiologist as necessary.
- Demonstrates knowledge of nursing action in the event of a Malignant Hyperthermia crisis.
- Provides input and recommendation for the preparation and implementation of capital and operational budgets.
- Assists with surgical suite turnovers.
- Ability to take on-call as needed.
- Communicates with other health care team members to resolve operational problems, patient satisfaction and clinical initiatives.
- Participates in mandatory training requirements as per unit/hospital policies.
- Engages in continuing education/inservices to enhance knowledge.
- Attends staff meetings.
- Involves in performance improvement initiatives.
- Orientation of new staff, students and/or volunteers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Graduate of a state approved and/or accredited RN program required.
- BSN or obtain BSN within 5 years of hire required.
- Note: RNs that were hired prior to 10/1/13 that do not have a BSN are grandfathered.
- BSN upon hire preferred.
- Two years Medical/Surgical nursing and Operating Room experience preferred.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:
- Massachusetts Registered Nursing License.
- LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Basic Life Support.
