Winchester College seeks to appoint a well-qualified, able and inspiring Teacher of Mathematics to join a thriving and collegiate department of 14 teachers. Mathematics is a highly popular subject at the College, with nearly half of the Sixth Form pupils opting for Further Mathematics. The department believes that learning should be enjoyable, memorable and rigorous, maintaining strong links with Science, Computer Science and Economics, alongside an extensive outreach programme. This role is equally suitable for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) or those with more experience who wish to support high-achieving pupils aiming for top-tier UK and US universities.
The Role: Accountable to the Head of Mathematics, the successful candidate will take responsibility for classes across the full age and ability range of the school. The role combines a passion for high-level mathematical instruction with a commitment to the pastoral care and extra-curricular life of a full boarding community.
- Teaching & Academic Excellence
- Timetable Delivery: Teach a set weekly timetable, ensuring lessons are challenging and meet the pupils' vast appetite for the subject.
- Assessment & Tracking: Set and mark work in accordance with school policies and maintain accurate records of attainment and progress.
- Academic Support: Be available for extra teaching outside the timetable to support individual pupil needs.
- Scholarship Support: Assist with the marking of scholarship and entrance examinations as required.
- Communication & Professional Growth
- Pupil Reporting: Write regular reports and provide constructive feedback to monitor the progress of all pupils.
- Parental Engagement: Communicate with parents regarding progress through planned events (parents' evenings) and on an 'as-needs-be' basis.
- Best Practice: Participate in the Professional Development Review system and share innovative digital resources with colleagues.
- Collaboration: Attend staff meetings, chapel services and professional development days to contribute to the wider school culture.
- Pastoral & Additional Duties
- House Tutoring: Act as a tutor to a group of pupils in a boarding house, supporting their academic progress and overall well-being.
- Invigilation & Cover: Cover for absences when required and invigilate internal and external exams in accordance with board regulations.
- Extra-Curricular: Contribute to the wider life of the school, supporting activities such as challenges, Olympiad training or other sporting and cultural pursuits.

- Education: An excellent Honours degree relevant to Mathematics.

- Analytical Mindset: The ability to use a range of strategies to facilitate learning and meet the demands of a high-achieving cohort.

What We Offer
- Start Date: 1 September 2026 (flexible for the right candidate).
- Salary: Winchester College has its own generous salary scale (above the national scale). Special Responsibility Allowances (SRAs) are available for additional roles such as running a sport or a department.
