Job Description

Winchester College is looking to appoint a Lead Squash Coach who will be responsible for the development and progression of the school’s squash programme, fostering a positive team environment, and promoting skill development, sportsmanship, and a love for the sport among students.

The coach will plan and conduct practices, on both an individual and small group basis, as well as organising matches and tournaments.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the high number of pupils playing squash competitively and recreationally.
• Oversee the delivery of high quality squash sessions to individuals and groups, including 1‑to‑1 sessions to sports award holders and 1st VI players.
• Organise and communicate all squash sessions with pupils and relevant staff.
• Manage the competitive squash programme by organising and implementing squash fixtures throughout the year for boys’ and girls’ teams, ensuring transport, catering, equipment and other items are provided.
• Work collaboratively with sports centre staff and sports coaches, and communicate diligently with staff, parents and Housemasters regarding pupils’ training and development.
• Assist the teaching staff who support the squash programme to ensure safe and enjoyable principles and practices are continually employed.
• Work with the school’s Head of Athletic Development to implement appropriate training programmes that enhance the conditioning and athleticism of the squash players.
• Provide regular match reports and squash features for the school website.
• Provide termly reports for any sports award holders who play squash.
• Support special projects as directed by the Director of Sport, e. g. future squash tournaments and taster days with prep schools.
• Work outside normal hours at the request of the Director of Sport with reasonable notice.
• Coach and assist in the delivery of sport on designated days of the week, both during the day and evenings (including Saturdays and some Sundays).
• Assist with the smooth running and delivery of Prep School and outreach programme and sports volunteering opportunities where applicable.
• Undertake coaching of pupils at Pilgrim’s School when they are using the Winchester College squash centre as part of their PE and/or Commoners programme.
• Help in the recruitment of talented squash players who have the academic credentials to attend Winchester College through taster days, local tournaments, etc.
• Manage the squash equipment, ensuring supplies are maintained or replaced and communicate purchases required.
• Undertake coaching courses, participate in inset (staff training) days and similar professional development as required.
• Maintain and develop new links with surrounding community, external sporting bodies and other networks in squash.
• Support delivery of another sport during the summer term (Cloister Time) according to your level of expertise.
• Create and support implementation of a development plan for Squash in line with the wider vision, aims and objectives of the Sports Department.
• Build a strong culture of performance and aspiration within squash; ensure coaching and delivery to pupils reflects best practice.
• Attend Sports Department meetings and collaborate with the department on the implementation of departmental aims, vision and objectives.
• Support the Director of Sport with other duties when required.
• Play a full part in the pastoral responsibilities associated with working in a boarding school, ensuring pastoral wellbeing of pupils.
• Take a proactive role in ensuring the pastoral wellbeing of pupils, drawing the prompt attention of relevant staff to any welfare issues.

Person Specification and Key Qualities

• Ideally coaching squash in an educational environment.
• Minimum three years coaching experience as a qualified England Squash Coach and preferably already qualified as Talent Development Coach.
• Experience attending various Public School and National Schools’ tournaments and/or organising tournaments/leagues.
• Knowledge of up‑to‑date squash rules and relevant changes.
• Committed to developing and instilling excellence in young athletes.
• Knowledge of long‑term development practices for young male and female athletes.
• Outstanding communication skills in a variety of environments and media.
• Well‑developed administrative and organisational skills.
• Ideally able to assist with one of the other major Summer sports: cricket, tennis, athletics.
• Strong team player, capable of integrating own ideas within a broader organisational environment.
• Capable of planning and delivering against identified goals.
• A self‑starter capable of creating and implementing new ideas.

Flexible start date for the right candidate, preference for commencement at the beginning of the next academic year, 01 September 2026.

Hours of Work

This is a part‑time role, working 25 hours per week for approximately 33 working weeks per year.

Working weeks normally align with the school’s published term dates but may include required days immediately before or after term to support induction, pre‑season training, sport tours, fixtures, tournaments and other role‑related commitments.

Salary

Salary: £20,308 per annum, pro‑rated from £32,000, paid in 12 equal monthly instalments.
