We are seeking a confident, self-starting operative to work in our busy Special Maintenance team. You’ll be working primarily as a Pest Control Officer responding to requests from members of the public requesting assistance, occasionally working in commercial premises, but also assisting internal council departments such as Housing and Environmental Health. The role is physically active involving ladders and entering manholes, as well as carrying equipment such as CCTV cameras. The role would also involve pest prevention, including erecting bird scaring devices or netting on buildings, or installing one-way valves in sewers. The role covers a wide range of species from rats through to bed bugs and could involve poisons, air weapons, insecticides or traps. Risk awareness and high levels of safety around customers and their premises is essential.
Responsibilities
- Respond to requests from the public for pest control assistance, including occasional work in commercial premises.
- Assist internal council departments such as Housing and Environmental Health.
- Engage with distressed individuals with clear, calm communication; explain technical work areas to non-technical audiences.
- Carry out physically active tasks: ladders, entering manholes, transporting equipment such as CCTV cameras.
- Carry out pest prevention measures: erecting bird scaring devices or netting on buildings; installing one-way valves in sewers.
- Work with a wide range of species (rats, bed bugs, etc.) and may involve poisons, insecticides, traps, or related controls; maintain high safety standards.
- Support the wider Special Maintenance team for high-profile events or emergencies when required.
Qualifications
- Fully qualified to the Royal Society For Public Health level 2 award in pest management (or equivalent) across all main pest control disciplines (Rodents/Avian/Insects).
- Relevant experience, ideally in a local authority environment; experience in a maintenance environment is an advantage.
- A driving licence is essential; Basic DBS check required.
- IT skills are an advantage as the service moves to a fully digital platform.
