An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Multi-skilled Shift Technician who will be based at the prestigious HJ Heinz site in Wigan. The position involves maintaining the Company’s Repack operation and NDC automation equipment.

The successful candidate will work on a new bespoke packaging line, utilizing hi-tech 6-axis pick and place robots and fully automatic palletisers.

The role requires rotating over three shifts: 6-2, 2-10, 10-6, Sunday – Thursday for nights, and Monday – Friday for other shifts. Total flexibility in shift working is essential, and applicants must be available to work any 5 out of 7 days as required.

The position reports directly to the Engineering Team Leader.

The Role:

The primary aim is to systematically maintain and support a new production line to ensure operational uptime.

Provide advice and expertise in electrical and mechanical systems to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Perform continuous improvement work, meeting agreed timescales, quality standards, and KPIs.

Identify and raise defects through plant surveillance and monitoring, using root cause analysis to prioritize issues.

Investigate plant failures or deterioration, recommend remedial actions, and monitor their effectiveness.

Support maintenance of plant history and statutory records using the company’s management system \"Workmate\".

Identify improvements to engineering plant and propose solutions.

Contribute to quality improvement initiatives with a focus on getting it right the first time.

Assist with breakdowns and servicing in other areas, mainly the Chameleon line and DC automation.

Implement continuous improvement and preventative maintenance strategies.

Maintain housekeeping standards within the operational environment and the Repack department at the Distribution Centre.

The Person:

Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.

Work well with cross-functional teams and on own initiative.

Be multi-skilled with knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic components and systems.

Have a passion for Continuous Improvement and demonstrate expertise in this area.

Willingness to share knowledge and train others to upskill.

Be flexible with tasks and adaptable to work pattern changes.

Possess sound knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and practices, with a commitment to Safe Systems of Work.

Knowledge of Lean Processes and their applications is advantageous.

The Production Line Includes:

Six-axis pick and place robots, palletisation systems, conveyor systems, and labelling equipment. Experience with these systems is a plus.

Qualifications:

Minimum of one or more of the following:

  • ONC or equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Apprentice-trained in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • City & Guilds qualification relevant to factory production
  • EITB engineering training
