New look and direction for Swindon’s domestic abuse specialists

The charity formerly known as Swindon Women’s Aid has revealed a new name and direction with a vision to use education, intervention, and prevention to see an end to domestic abuse in society.

Now called Society Without Abuse (SWA), the charity focuses on an integrated whole-family approach developed through 50 years of working with families, survivors, and perpetrators in Swindon.

SWA’s specialist teams support survivors to recover and rebuild their lives, empower the next generation to build healthy relationships, and educate the wider community—including businesses and groups—about supporting those at risk and removing stigma. They also work to prevent future abuse by supporting individuals exhibiting unhealthy relationship behaviors to change.

Chair of the SWA Board, Nicky Alberry, explained: “We felt it was the right time to re-assess our achievements over the last 50 years and our future direction, which led us to rename the charity to better reflect our goals.”

“Our expanding team works with well-known businesses, local authorities, and police, aiming to effect societal change for safer futures free from domestic abuse. We are confident in our skills and look forward to helping many more as the ‘new’ SWA—Society Without Abuse.”

Interim CEO Kate Rowland added: “SWA will be a legacy Swindon can be proud of. Our goal is a society without abuse, and our new name reminds us and our supporters of this purpose.”

She emphasized that ending domestic abuse requires collective effort—education, prevention, and intervention are key.

SWA was launched at a special event at their shop, Survivor@SWA, in The Parade, hosted by Patron and Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Sarah Troughton, who said: “SWA’s support is vital across society. Addressing the root causes of domestic abuse is essential, and I am proud to support this charity.”
