Environmental Control & Protection - Keeping Wiltshire Safe

Are you looking to broaden your Environmental Health experience? Join our dynamic Environmental Control & Protection Team tackling new challenges every day across the beautiful county of Wiltshire. We are seeking a motivated Public Protection Officer to join our Environmental Control & Protection Team within the wider Public Protection Service. This service brings together trading standards, animal health, environmental protection, licensing, pest control, and food health & safety.

In this role, you will be responsible for sampling and risk-assessing private water supplies across Wiltshire. There are more than 650 supplies in our area, ranging from single domestic properties to entire communities and significant visitor & commercial facilities. This means every day offers something different, with a mix of technical challenge, public engagement, and problem-solving. You will be supported by an experienced and knowledgeable team covering a wide range of environmental protection activities.

The role offers the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in water supply regulation, and you will be supported to become an accredited sampler under the Drinking Water Inspectorate's accreditation scheme. Wiltshire continues to grow economically and socially, presenting a varied and stimulating range of environmental challenges that will help you develop your technical knowledge and professional capability.

We are looking for someone who brings enthusiasm, professionalism, and a positive, flexible approach to their work. We welcome applicants who hold a degree in Environmental Health or an allied subject, as well as students completing a part-time degree in these fields. Strong communication skills, effective time management, and the ability to build constructive relationships will be important in this role. You will also need a full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle. Experience or a good understanding of private water supply regulation is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.

Wiltshire Council is a friendly, welcoming place to work, with a 'One Council' ethos. That’s why we focus on getting the things that matter to our people right.

The council is committed to creating an environment of positive working relationships where everyone feels engaged, supported and able to thrive. We will not tolerate discrimination, bullying or harassment of any kind. Everyone is expected to promote a culture of inclusion, dignity, trust and respect which is underpinned by our vision and Our Identity framework.

This role may be subject to certain successful security checks; please see the role description for more information. We are firmly committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and to the principles of inclusion and diversity in both employment and the delivery of services.

Please ensure to regularly check your spam/junk folder for any communication from us regarding your application status. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on any important updates or interview invitations.
