Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and member of Executive Board. Closely working with the Treasurer (Trustee).

Background: The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is the longest canal restoration in the UK and has recently developed its 25 year vision and 5 year business plan. This is an exciting time to join the Trust and contribute to the 9 communities along the route. We have an experienced finance team already in place and your role will be to support that team in an inclusive and communicative way improving processes and capability as we grow.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of the finance team and its activities, ensuring all Trust procedures and good accounting practice are followed.
  • Ensuring monthly and annual accounts are prepared and authorised (Not responsible for the detailed production of the accounts as this is completed by the Head of Accounts).
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant Government and Charity Commission requirements.
  • Increasing the capacity of the finance team as required and developing the internal processes.
  • Along with the treasurer, ensuring appropriate payments are authorised and complete.
  • Ensure the Trust’s cash position is monitored and protected.

Key tasks and activities:

  • Work with the CEO, Trustees and Directors to help define and create an effective finance function to deliver the Trust’s restoration plans.
  • Provide progress reports to the CEO and Leadership Team.
  • Chair the Finance Team Meetings.
  • Development of individual tasks with the Head of Accounts and the team.
  • Motivation of the volunteer team.
  • Working with the HR manager to interview and ensure induction of new finance team members.
  • Preparation of the annual budget.

Skills and resources required:

  • Strong leadership and understanding of the need for consistent management processes.
  • Chartered accountant.
  • Ability to manage diverse teams and liaise with internal stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to develop structure, recruit and motivate.
  • Personal computing facilities including reliable internet access.

Note: The WBCT is a charity and relies on volunteers and the time they can afford to support the Trust’s work. It is estimated that this role will require about 6 hours per week.
