Purpose of role
In general, to be an active participant in the work of the Trust to restore the Wilts & Berks canal, especially regarding development of high-level financial strategy and governance of the charity and limited company. Trustees have overall responsibility for governance and overarching strategy, while our CEO and Executive Board have responsibility for operational decisions.
Experience and Skills
- Current or previous accountancy/bookkeeping experience in a senior role as a key member of a management board in commercial enterprises, government or charities
- Relevant experience to help guide the rigorous governance of our charity
- Experience of public advocacy on behalf of an enterprise with multiple stakeholders
- Proven commitment to teamwork and collegiate decision-making
- The basic IT skills needed to perform the role.
Major tasks and activities
- Ensuring, in concert with fellow Trustees, that finance policies are in place and fit for purpose, that the Trust has a clear overarching strategy regarding the safe delivery of the restored Wilts & Berks canal, and that the Trust is compliant with the regulations of relevant regulatory authorities, in particular the Health & Safety Executive, the Charity Commission and Companies House
- Contributing to discussion on the Trust's finance strategy
- Working with the Trust's finance team to ensure that appropriate finance procedures are defined (our FD is responsible for ensuring they are followed), and that the finance team produces regular reports for review by the Executive Board and Trustees.
- Attending bi-monthly Trustee meetings and the Trust's Annual General Meeting (typically in October)
- Submitting the annual accounts in conjunction with the Trust Chair and Trust Company Secretary
Interfaces with
The Trustee Treasurer will interface with the following people in the course of his/her duties:
- Internally: Fellow trustees, The Finance Management Group, FD and Head of Accounts, The CEO, Other WBCT volunteers, WBCT accountants, Charity Commission and Companies House (in tandem with the Trust Company Secretary)
- Externally: WBCT accountants, Charity Commission and Companies House (in tandem with the Trust Company Secretary)
Budget responsibility
Trustees are collectively responsible for the approval of budgets produced by the Board of Directors.
Remuneration, hours of working and holiday entitlement
This is an unpaid volunteer position with prompt reimbursement of legitimate expenses. After an initial induction learning curve, it is likely that the equivalent of a couple of hours per week will be required, scheduled flexibly. As per normal for a volunteer role, there are no stipulations as to holiday entitlement.
