Overview
In this role you will lead the design process for Willmott Dixon projects, coordinating cross‑disciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality, cost‑effective design outputs. Based in Hitchin with a hybrid working model, you’ll drive design programmes across Education, Leisure, Transport, Blue Light, Commercial and Residential sectors. You will shape design governance, mentor junior staff, and maintain regulatory compliance to support project success and the company’s mission of delivering brilliant buildings and transforming lives.

Responsibilities
- Lead the design process to produce information meeting specifications and cost plans
- Manage appointment and performance of consultants within their scope of services
- Develop design programmes with consultants to meet whole‑life milestones
- Deliver cost‑effective, innovative technical solutions
- Chair design team meetings and drive action plans to completion
- Ensure designs meet statutory and regulatory approvals with proper documentation
- Develop, mentor and coach junior design management staff
- Provide technical leadership to the business
Key requirements
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Attention to detail with ability to manage multi‑disciplinary teams
- Experience developing and managing design programmes
- Knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements for construction design
- Ability to produce cost‑effective, creative technical solutions
- Preconstruction experience is essential
- Working knowledge of construction industry and its challenges
- Strong negotiation and communication abilities
- Technical knowledge across architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines
- Team‑oriented with proficient use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), Microsoft Project, Bluebeam and 3D modelling review tools
