Purpose of the Role
The Commissioning Editor is responsible for leading content and product development throughout the lifecycle, from inception to launch and beyond, including:
- Identifying and researching opportunities
- Commissioning, managing and negotiating with content creators
- Managing quality assurance
- Overseeing production and technology development activities
- Managing and continually seeking to improve a product post-launch based on meaningful metrics
They follow a user-focused, best-practice approach to developing relevant and high-quality content in a variety of media, and delivering it in the most appropriate format (including: print and digital publications, online, apps, and e-learning).
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain collaborative client relationships - including gaining approval for content and product development (at the start of, and during, a project)
- Present new ideas and opportunities to the client
- Attend industry and client events
- Champion the end user, and challenge assumptions
- Create, maintain and deliver against project plans to meet business and client demands
- Input into management information, presentations, and reports
- Create business cases for new projects; provide financial analysis and forecasting
- Set and manage project budgets
- Negotiate contracts and fees for authors and content creators; record and report
