A well-established UK law firm is looking to recruit a Civil Liberties Solicitor to join its specialist team in Liverpool.

This is an excellent opportunity for a solicitor or legal executive with experience in civil liberties to develop their career within a specialist police claims practice.

The successful candidate will manage a varied caseload of pre-litigation and litigated matters, acting for institutional clients and insurers in complex and sensitive claims.

You will work alongside experienced lawyers and have the opportunity to develop your technical expertise, advocacy skills and client relationships within a supportive team environment.

The Role

  • Manage a caseload of pre-litigated and litigated claims against the police
  • Act for police organisations, insurers and other institutional clients in the defence of civil claims
  • Handle a variety of matters including false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, trespass and Human Rights Act claims
  • Manage employer's liability and other related civil claims where appropriate
  • Review evidence, assess liability and develop effective case strategies
  • Liaise with clients, insurers, counsel, experts and other solicitors
  • Prepare correspondence, statements, reports and other legal documentation
  • Attend court hearings and undertake advocacy where appropriate to your level of experience
  • Maintain accurate case records and ensure deadlines and actions are managed effectively
  • Support client relationship management, training and business development activities
  • Assist with the supervision and development of junior colleagues where appropriate
  • Keep up to date with relevant developments in civil liberties and police-related claims
  • Deliver a consistently high standard of client service

About You

  • A Qualified Solicitor or Legal Executive with 0–3 years' PQE
  • Experience in civil liberties or claims work
  • Defendant experience would be advantageous, although candidates with claimant experience will also be considered
  • Interest in developing a career in police claims / civil liberties
  • Knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and litigation processes
  • Police law experience would be advantageous but is not essential
  • Confident undertaking advocacy or keen to develop advocacy skills
  • Strong analytical, drafting and case management abilities
  • Excellent communication and client relationship skills
  • Highly organised with strong time management skills
  • Able to work effectively under pressure and manage competing deadlines
  • Comfortable working independently while contributing positively to a wider team
  • Proactive, commercially aware and committed to delivering a high standard of client service
