About the Role:

As a Student Success Tutor, your role is pivotal in supporting students’ academic, personal, and professional development throughout their educational journey. You provide tailored guidance to help students navigate academic challenges, build effective study skills, and engage fully with their learning. By fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging proactive participation, you empower students to take ownership of their progress and success. Your work involves close collaboration with academic staff, support services, and administrative teams to ensure a cohesive and responsive student support system. Whether through one-on-one tutoring, group sessions, or outreach activities, your goal is to remove barriers, enhance student engagement, and contribute to positive student outcomes.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance to students regarding the support available to them when required.
  • Engage in the interests and enthusiasm of students, inspiring them to learn.
  • Support students in building relationships with other students and members of staff, fostering a sense of belonging to the school’s community.
  • Enable students to take responsibility for, and become partners in, their learning, academic progression, and achievement.
  • Develop appropriate methods and resources for teaching and learning support in relation to lectures, tutorials, and seminars, including online classes.
  • Monitor student progress, providing support, including advice on study skills, as required.
  • Analyse student difficulties, recommending instant support to resolve issues or referring on as appropriate.
  • Recognize mitigating circumstances, deferral processes, and other academic regulations to ensure students receive the precise supports and suggestions based on their situation and needs.
  • Provide basic academic support to students, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Help students to find appropriate learning resources.
  • Recognize and report usual academic and IT-related matters that might benefit from a preventive resolution.
  • Monitor student attendance on a session-by-session basis and take support from the student service/registry support team to identify any risk that may arise.
  • Ensure the students are engaged and continuing their study by overcoming any barrier.
  • Work closely with the registry support and student support team to develop a multidimensional support system for the students.
  • Work with the academic team to contact all students who have not submitted assessments and refer them to the retention team if applicable.
  • Take responsibility for specific administrative duties such as personal tutoring, examinations, and assessments.
  • Be proactive in identifying and escalating areas of risk to the student experience or institutional reputation.
  • Actively participate in enrolment and induction processes to develop a strong link with the students from the very first moments of their journey at ESL.
  • Arrange to provide contact details to the student during registration.
  • Actively participate in face-to-face or online induction activities.
  • Retain records of meetings or other means of contact with the student in accordance with Data Protection legislation and University guidelines.
  • Arrange to meet or have contact with their tutee at least once per semester.
  • Be familiar with the services that are available both within and outside of ESL (e.g. Student Support, Library).
  • Direct students to appropriate academic colleagues when additional program support is needed.
  • Monitor the student’s progress and direct them to appropriate individual support if their progress is not satisfactory.
  • Respect the student’s right to confidentiality, obtaining their permission should it be necessary to discuss the student’s circumstances with others; (in certain exceptional circumstances, disclosure may have to take place against your wishes for avoidance of significant risk).
  • Direct the student to appropriate support for the development of study skills.
  • Respect the student’s right not to seek or accept support or guidance, even though this might be disadvantageous to their progress.
  • Act as an advocate for the student where appropriate and contribute to requests for references.
  • Comply with the School’s Equality and Diversity policy when undertaking all activities.
  • Undertake appropriate professional development to benefit their role.

Essential:

  • Experience providing academic or learning support in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of higher education academic processes, including assessment, progression, and mitigating circumstances.
  • Ability to support students from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of learning needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust.
  • Ability to monitor student progress and provide tailored academic advice or interventions.
  • Experience maintaining accurate records in line with data protection regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across academic and professional services teams.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office and digital tools for online teaching or student engagement.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a tutoring or personal academic support role in higher education.
  • Understanding of barriers to student engagement, such as mental health, disability, or financial pressures.
  • Awareness of inclusive teaching and learning practices.
  • Experience delivering academic skills workshops or group support sessions.
  • Familiarity with student record systems (e.g. SITS) or virtual learning environments (e.g. Moodle, Blackboard).
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification or professional development in student support, education, or wellbeing.
