Role Introduction
The Digital Workplace Engineer will be responsible for the engineering, delivery and ongoing improvement of the organisation’s Microsoft 365 and Digital Workplace environment.
Working within a cloud-first, laptop-first strategy, the role will design, implement and support secure, scalable workplace solutions across Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Teams, Intune, Entra ID and associated security technologies.
The position combines hands‑on engineering, project delivery and third‑line support, working closely with Security, Architecture, Infrastructure and Identity teams to improve user experience, security and operational resilience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engineer, implement and optimise Microsoft 365 Messaging & Collaboration services, including Exchange Online and Microsoft Teams.
- Lead Microsoft 365 migrations, tenant optimisation and workplace transformation initiatives.
- Implement and manage Microsoft Purview, including DLP, Information Protection, Retention, eDiscovery and compliance controls.
- Manage messaging security technologies including Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Exchange Online Protection and Proofpoint.
- Maintain secure email services using SPF, DKIM, DMARC, DNS, SMTP and certificate management.
- Support Microsoft Entra ID, Conditional Access, Intune and Zero Trust workplace technologies.
- Provide Tier 3 technical support and act as an escalation point for complex Microsoft 365 and workplace issues.
- Develop automation using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 administration tools.
- Maintain technical standards, documentation, operational procedures and engineering best practices.
- Work with Architecture, Security, Identity, Networking and Infrastructure teams on workplace transformation programmes.
- Identify opportunities for automation, service improvement and adoption of emerging technologies including Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
- 5+ years' experience engineering Microsoft 365 Messaging & Collaboration environments.
- Expert knowledge of Exchange Online and Microsoft Teams.
- Strong Microsoft 365 administration, governance and security experience.
- Strong experience with Microsoft Purview, including DLP, Retention and Information Protection.
- Experience with Defender for Office 365, Exchange Online Protection and/or Proofpoint.
- Experience with Exchange Hybrid environments and Microsoft 365 migrations.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, Conditional Access and Microsoft Intune.
- Experience with PowerShell automation and Microsoft Graph.
- Knowledge of SPF, DKIM, DMARC, DNS, SMTP and messaging protocols.
- Experience supporting global, enterprise or regulated Microsoft 365 environments.
- Proven Tier 3 support and technical escalation experience.
Desirable
- Microsoft 365 Copilot implementation or adoption experience.
- Zero Trust transformation experience.
- Teams Telephony.
- SharePoint Online and OneDrive administration.
