About the Role:

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Associate Peer Review Performance Manager to join the Peer Review Performance team within Editorial Excellence. In this role, you will drive the day-to-day peer review performance of a segment of the Research Publishing journal portfolio. You will oversee peer review and Journal Editorial Office services, working closely with editors, external Editorial Offices, vendor partners and internal colleagues to ensure consistent performance and a positive author experience. You will monitor performance against agreed behaviours and key performance indicators, use data to identify opportunities for improvement and help align journal workflows with peer review best practices and standards. Your work will support timely and high-quality editorial decisions, effective workflows and the integrity of the manuscript and peer review process.

How you will make an impact:

  • Oversee the manuscript peer review process for an assigned portfolio of journals, from submission through to final editorial decision and onward handover.
  • Manage the day-to-day delivery of peer review and Journal Editorial Office services.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of editors, Editorial Office administrators and vendor partners against agreed expectations, behaviours and key performance indicators.
  • Provide clear feedback and manage performance-related queries, escalations, retraining and remedial actions where expectations are not being met.
  • Use reports, data and operational insights to identify trends, investigate performance issues and implement improvements.
  • Review and optimise journal workflows, ensuring alignment with peer review best practices, standards and agreed processes.
  • Support the adoption of new services, tools and enhanced workflows across the journal portfolio.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of peer review processes and identify, escalate and support the resolution of research integrity concerns.
  • Support journal-level changes, including transitions between Editorial Office models and the onboarding of new partners.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Editorial Excellence, Publishing Development, Partner Publishing, Publishing Operations and other teams on journal performance, strategic initiatives and improvement projects.

We are looking for people who:

  • Have at least two years of relevant or transferable experience in publishing, editorial operations, workflow management, performance management or another process-led professional environment.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of relevant industry experience.
  • Are data literate and comfortable using reports, performance measures and operational insights to inform decisions and improve results.
  • Can learn new systems and platforms quickly and have a strong understanding of process and workflow management.
  • Can build effective working relationships with editors, external Editorial Offices, vendor partners and internal colleagues.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently, including when providing feedback, influencing stakeholders or managing challenging conversations.
  • Have strong customer service skills and can understand and respond to the needs of authors, editors and other stakeholders.
  • Can manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate sound judgement, effective problem-solving skills and the ability to work productively through change and ambiguity.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in scholarly publishing, journal editorial operations or manuscript peer review.
  • Knowledge of manuscript submission or peer review systems.
  • Experience working with external Editorial Offices, administrators or vendor partners.
  • Experience using self-service reporting or data-visualisation tools such as Power BI.
  • Experience in project management, change management, workflow optimisation or continuous improvement.
  • A publishing qualification.
