About the Role:

The Publisher is responsible for the maintenance and development of a list of Health Science journals, across all business models and ownership types. The Publisher will continuously and proactively evaluate the performance of the program as it relates to Wiley and department objectives. The Publisher meets and exceeds objectives with regard to content growth, including submissions, acceptances and published articles. The Publisher understands industry trends and key business drivers, how they relate to Wiley and the portfolio, is aware of the competition and factors that differentiate Wiley in the market and is able to communicate complex information and the potential implications and opportunities to stakeholders. The Publisher monitors the external competitive landscape and matches developments in the external market to publishing and growth opportunities in the list. The Publisher is expected to develop and maintain a network of scientific editors and board members associated with the relevant list, and continuously engage with them to gain insight, awareness and feedback on opportunities in the field, and seize on opportunities that may present a competitive advantage. The Publisher is expected to solve complex problems using in-depth analytical or creative thinking to identify innovative solutions. The Publisher will be expected to present journal development performance and strategic plans to editors to drive the right behaviours. The Publisher has in-depth knowledge and experience and knows how to build and communicate a business case to gain support and resource/investment for publishing development ideas. The Publisher manages editor performance independently and is expected to meet regularly with journal editors to review and report performance. When needed, the Publisher will also handle editor succession planning: creating transition plans, identifying successors for all relevant journals, negotiating and managing contractual relationships with journal editors, setting targets as directed by more senior team members. With colleagues, the Publisher interviews and makes recommendations on the appointment of editors. The Publisher is expected to use knowledge of internal and external business issues to improve processes, and to organize, maintain, and report on activities to the Associate Director and Senior Director in a timely manner.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop subject area to grow submissions and published output
  • Identify opportunities to drive growth by optimizing the current editorial model
  • Independently create plans and activities to drive publishing at scale
  • Independently and proactively manage performance of journal editors
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues to drive initiatives that drive quality, efficiency and productivity
  • Build and nurture relationships
  • Build a strong network with journal editors and be known in the community as a Wiley ambassador
  • Explain and communicate complex issues in research and research publishing, in an insightful manner
  • Delivers webinars, talks and workshops aimed to drive submissions
  • Develop new commercial opportunities for Wiley including new launches and flips
  • Creates impactful and insightful proposals to gain support and buy in for proposed solutions

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 4+ years of experience in academic or scholarly publishing
  • Strong awareness and conceptual understanding of trends in research and scholarly publishing, with the ability to apply them to a publishing portfolio
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a complex, high-value journal portfolio (society, proprietary, and hybrid editorial models)
  • Proven problem-solving skills, including the ability to independently analyze complex and multi-source information to develop effective solutions
  • Strong judgment and experience in driving improvements to journals/program performance
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus and secure buy-in from Editors, Editorial Boards, and Society partners to align titles with strategic priorities
  • Experience independently managing external stakeholder relationships, including Editors-in-Chief and editorial boards, with the ability to navigate complex relationships (including societies)
  • Strong collaboration skills with proven ability to work across departments and build productive working relationships
  • Ability to work independently with strong self-management skills
  • Strong presentation and communication skills, with the ability to create and deliver impactful presentations that influence outcomes and support team objectives
  • Acts as a trusted resource for colleagues with less experience and is recognized as a mentor and informal thought leader within a team environment
  • Demonstrates a continuous learning mindset and adapts to evolving industry trends

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of major industry trends and how they impact scholarly publishing, with the ability to communicate and apply insights strategically within a portfolio
  • Experience developing new ideas and initiatives based on market and industry trends
  • Prior experience influencing editorial strategy in partnership with societies or editorial boards

It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall within the range, however the ultimate salary offered for this role may be higher or lower and will be set based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.
