Wildtouch is looking for new volunteers. They normally start new volunteers in the animal hospital, cleaning cages, learning how to handle injured animals and assisting with basic treatment. Volunteers will then be trained in caring for our permanent animals and those in rehab aviaries. These tasks include daily feeding, cleaning and maintenance of enclosures. They have a collection of reptiles and exotic insects that require care daily. Other roles can include site maintenance and gardening. There are sometimes extra tasks that we will undertake, such as setting up aviaries, animals, and larger maintenance tasks.

Volunteers will have a lunch break; tea and coffee are available, but putting the kettle on usually means making a round for the whole team. Once the day's jobs are complete, there is an opportunity for volunteers to work with a particular animal for extra enrichment. Volunteers would usually work onsite at Wildtouch, with occasional opportunities to volunteer offsite at fundraising events.

Person Specification

They are a small team and welcome anyone willing to get in and get their hands dirty. Any extra specialties are welcomed. Our only specification is that volunteers be 20 years or over. Most of the admissions are birds, and we have some that are free roaming. This role isn’t appropriate for anyone with a phobia of birds.

Training & Support

Training is provided by management and experienced volunteers. They will work with volunteers to build confidence and accommodate areas that volunteers aren’t comfortable with.

Time Commitment

They ask that volunteers can commit to one day a week, starting at 09:00 and usually finishing around 15:00. They understand that volunteers sometimes have other commitments and may have to leave early.

About the Organisation

Wildtouch Wildlife Rescue was formed out of necessity in 2014 when several local wildlife rescues closed. Wildtouch Wildlife Rescue is a small, experienced rescue service run from our own home in Norfolk, rescuing and rehabilitating wild and exotic animals. They are dedicated to providing the best possible care for any sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife that comes into their care, regardless of species, whether that means caring for them themselves or transferring them to another facility. They work closely with a network of vets, specialist keepers, and rehabilitators around the country to ensure each animal receives the treatment it requires. They admit around 800 injured animals a year, mostly birds, but from time to time they have some mammals and reptiles. They have around 200 animals onsite, including 2 foxes, 5 owls, 5 ferrets, a flock of pigeons, several snakes (one being a 13ft Burmese Python), and lizard species.

And Finally, thank you for your interest; they look forward to having you join their team. Thank you for volunteering. You make a difference.
