We’re looking for someone who can nurture plants from seeds to plugs and wants to play a hands‑on role in restoring and safeguarding vital wetland habitats, while being able to inspire others to invest in conservation.
If you’re comfortable building relationships, boosting sales, and championing the value of wetland habitats as you are caring for native wildflowers, you might be exactly who we need. WWT’s Wetland Wildflowers enterprise, hosted at Slimbridge Wetland Centre in our refurbished polytunnel and propagation hub, grows locally sourced, native wildflowers and macrophytes from seed into hardy plug plants, with support from a committed group of volunteers.
The project aims to:
- Contribute to the restoration of wetland habitats across the Severn Vale landscape
- Champion the value of local distinctiveness and provenance in wetland flora
- Engage and inform local people about wetland ecology through volunteering and educational visits
- Become financially self‑sustaining through sale of our plants
As Wetland Wildflowers Coordinator, you’ll use your horticultural expertise to oversee and develop the project, with an initial focus on securing and expanding our stock of plants and supporting efforts to build our customer base. You’ll be responsible for all operational aspects as well as essential administration related to growing and selling plants. You’ll need to recruit, train and manage the volunteer team, which undertakes most routine plant husbandry tasks. In addition, you’ll be a champion for native wetland plants and spend some of your time engaging and informing others about their value.
For the right candidate, we can offer the opportunity to grow and shape a young business, and experience of supporting multiple projects delivering direct wetland conservation action. This role is based at WWT Slimbridge, working 22.5 hours per week between April and September and 15 hours per week between October and March. This is a 12‑month, fixed‑term contract.
About You: We are looking for a capable and experienced horticulturalist with strong practical skills in plant propagation and an interest in native species and habitat creation. You’ll enjoy working with people and be able to enthuse, support and manage a team of volunteers. You’ll also be an engaging and inspiring communicator able to showcase the importance of native wildflowers to a range of audiences. The right candidate will have a positive and innovative attitude to problem‑solving and developing new ideas, and will demonstrate energy and enthusiasm for growing sales as well as plants.
