We are seeking an experienced Principal Highways Engineer to support a busy Highway design and Construction team.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the HDC Team Manager by reporting risks, opportunities, performance, and delivery issues across projects.
  • Lead, coordinate, and support junior engineers, working closely with Team Leaders and Project Managers.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Feasibility Leads, and wider internal and external stakeholders to ensure design development aligns with agreed project outcomes.
  • Lead and coordinate detailed design activities including civil, street lighting, and 3D/vertical design, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and procedures.
  • Coordinate integrated design delivery across disciplines, including traffic signals, traffic management, and statutory utilities, securing necessary approvals and managing technical interfaces.
  • Prepare and manage contract and pre-construction documentation (including NEC Pre-Construction Information) and support Early Contractor Involvement (ECI).
  • Support commercial activities including cost estimates, bills of quantities, and pricing input.
  • Arrange and oversee site investigations and prepare associated briefs through approved frameworks.
  • Manage traffic regulation processes including TRO/TTRO applications and permit coordination with relevant stakeholders.
  • Undertake road safety audit coordination at all design stages.
  • Support project close-out activities, including as-built records and documentation management.

Essential:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (or closely related discipline)
  • Chartered Civil engineer or working towards (MICE/CEng or IEng)
  • Strong experience in highways design or civil infrastructure design
  • Knowledge of UK design standards such as DMRB, MCHW and NEC contracts
  • Experience with design delivery from concept through detailed design
  • Proficiency in relevant design software: Civil 3D / AutoCAD

This is a hybrid role with two days working from the office (typically a Monday and a Thursday).
