The Natural Helper will address addictions and mental health through counselling, teachings and referral services in an innovative approach that is reflective of the values, ethics, and beliefs of the individuals, groups, and families in need. The First Nations Mental Wellness Continuum Framework will be incorporated into services to ensure cultural relevance.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide, coordinate and support all aspects of cultural knowledge transfer and planning.
  • Provide traditional teachings and ceremonies in a safe and acceptable environment.
  • Work to promote Anishnaabemowin, cultural awareness, safety and competency.
  • Ensure that culturally appropriate and effective services are provided.
  • Facilitate culturally appropriate and efficient services to the community of Wikwemikong.
  • Follow a Code of Ethics.
  • Follow a Code of Conduct.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Aboriginal children, youth and families in a healing and reconciliation capacity.
  • Post-Secondary education in Indigenous Studies and/or a combination of equivalent and relevant education.
  • Skills and experience in presenting workshops and facilitating groups.
  • Experience in program planning, development, implementation, data collection and evaluation.
  • Anishnaabemowin is an asset.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must provide a clear criminal reference check (CPIC), which includes screening for vulnerable sector.
  • Recognized Natural Helper.
  • Individual counselling experience required.
  • Knowledgeable regarding disability and wellness programs, applications, including the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of wellness.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and e-mail required.
  • Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to privacy.
