The Drinking Water Assistant is responsible for collecting, testing, monitoring, and documenting drinking water samples to help ensure safe and clean water for community members. This role supports Community Health Primary Care – Environmental by conducting routine water quality checks, identifying concerns, maintaining records, and working with community leadership, water operators, and health or environmental staff to support safe drinking water practices in Wiikwemkoong.
Responsibilities:
- Collect water samples from homes, community buildings, beaches, and distribution points.
- Perform routine water quality testing in accordance with applicable standards, guidelines, and procedures.
- Monitor chlorine residuals, turbidity, bacteriological samples, and other water quality indicators as required.
- Record, track, and report test results accurately and on time.
- Identify and report potential water quality concerns promptly to the appropriate supervisor or designated authority.
- Apply your experience using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, as well as databases, email, and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.
- Assist with maintaining testing equipment, supplies, and sampling records.
- Support water operators, environmental health staff, and community-based monitoring activities.
- Follow health and safety procedures during sampling, testing, travel, and site visits.
- Help communicate water safety information and advisories to community members when required.
- Assist with preparing reports for leadership, regulatory partners, or funding agencies as needed.
Qualifications:
- Diploma, certificate, or training in environmental science, water treatment, public health, or a related field is an asset.
- Must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution or must have graduated within the past six months.
- Experience in water sampling, water testing, environmental monitoring, or community infrastructure support is preferred.
- Knowledge of drinking water standards, record-keeping practices, and safe sampling procedures is an asset.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.
- A valid driver’s license may be required.
- Willingness to travel within the community is required.
- Knowledge of First Nations community contexts, cultural safety, and respectful community engagement is an asset.
