Widener University is currently seeking a Senior Cataloging Assistant in the Wolfgram Memorial Library. Reporting to the Head of Collections & Resource Management, the Senior Cataloging Assistant performs a variety of bibliographic duties including copy cataloging of all material types in OCLC, original cataloging, and bibliographic record upgrades for all formats as well as performs original cataloging of materials in Widener archival collection and other materials in OCLC and Library Services Platform (EBSCO’s FOLIO). The Senior Cataloging Assistant supervises the cataloging assistant and student employees. Additionally, the Senior Cataloging Assistant maintains statistical information for the department and coordinates the workflow in the Cataloging Department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):
- Performs original cataloging for materials in the Widener archival collections and library collections.
- Performs non-Library of Congress copy cataloging of all formats of monographic materials on OCLC according to current cataloging rules using Library of Congress subject headings and classification schedules. Supervises cataloging of all formats of monographic materials with Library of Congress copy and performs Library of Congress monographic copy cataloging when circumstances require.
- Performs copy cataloging of serial materials in all formats. Maintains OCLC local holdings records for serially published materials.
- Responsible for cataloging a variety of formats (print, digital, video, etc.) for all materials that are acquired by the library whether through gift or purchase.
- Works with the Head of Collections & Resource Management to perform original cataloging on OCLC, including cataloging of Widener theses and dissertations.
- Special projects as needed, including enhancing FOLIO inventory records to add links to full text content of previously cataloged materials.
- Supervises Cataloging Assistant. Trains and supervises student employees.
- Coordinates the workflow in the Cataloging Department.
- Supervises all aspects of book processing, including stamping and labeling.
- Supervises all aspects of book withdrawal, including deleting records from OCLC and FOLIO, keeping statistical data and properly disposing of books.
- Responsible for supervising in-house book repairing and preparing books for professional binding using automated bindery software.
- Together with Head of Collections & Resource management, works to create and maintain authority records in FOLIO as the functionality is developed in future releases of FOLIO.
- Assures collection of accurate statistical data reflecting current cataloging activity and discarding activity.
Secondary responsibilities:
- Assists in staffing the Library Information Desk
- Assists in providing Virtual Assistance Services
- Participates in library committee work
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):
Required:
- Post-secondary education and/or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of five years library experience.
- Experience with OCLC
- Familiarity with Library of Congress classification and subject headings.
Preferred:
- Experience using a modern library system
- Experience using EBSCO’s FOLIO
- Some graduate work in library/information science

- Ability to lift heavy (40 lb.) bound and unbound volumes
