Widener University seeks a Registered Nurse for the Student Engagement & Transformation division. Reporting to the Director of Student Health Services, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to support the health and well-being of the university’s student population. This position functions as part of an interdisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive, student-centered healthcare that promotes wellness, academic success, and a healthy campus community.
The RN performs clinical assessments, administers medications and immunizations, provides health education and counseling, and assists in the management of acute and chronic conditions under the direction of the Medical Director and/or Nurse Practitioner. The RN also plays a key role in managing the university’s pre-matriculation immunization and tuberculosis screening requirements, including maintaining compliance records, communicating with students regarding outstanding health documentation, and ensuring adherence to state and institutional public health guidelines. Additionally, the RN contributes to campus health promotion initiatives, collaborates with campus partners, and upholds confidentiality and professional standards consistent with state and federal regulations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to the student population in accordance with state nursing regulations, university policies, and Student Health Services protocols.
- Perform independent nursing assessments, clinical evaluations, and diagnoses; manage treatment plans; and facilitate timely referrals for medically complex conditions and psychological emergencies.
- Perform clinical procedures including phlebotomy, in-house laboratory testing, immunization and vaccine administration (for pre-matriculation, clinical program compliance, and travel medicine), vital signs assessment, vision screening, and review of laboratory results.
- Provide clinical consultation and education to students regarding preventive care and follow-up.
- Promote student health and wellness through participation in campus-wide health initiatives, development and delivery of wellness programs, and distribution of educational materials.
- Collaborate with campus partners to support disease prevention, health promotion, and student advocacy efforts.
- Manage university immunization and tuberculosis screening compliance by reviewing, verifying, and documenting pre-matriculation and ongoing health requirements for all incoming students.
- Conduct outreach via secure messaging, telephone, and email to ensure compliance and continuity of care.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered nursing care to the student population, including assessment, treatment, immunizations, travel medicine consultations, suture removal, ear irrigation, and implementation of nurse-driven protocols.
- Conduct medical triage (via telephone and in-person) to assess, prioritize, and coordinate appropriate levels of care, ensuring timely escalation for urgent or emergent needs.
- Apply clinical expertise across multiple roles including a clinician, coordinator, consultant, educator, and advocate to support the health and well-being of students and the broader university community.
- Independently manage university pre-matriculation immunization and tuberculosis screening requirements, administering all required vaccines and travel-related immunizations using appropriate techniques and documentation.
- Provide Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) in compliance with federal guidelines.
- Maintain and reconcile immunization and laboratory databases, coordinate with outside vendors, and ensure accurate and efficient ordering of medical supplies and vaccines.
- Develop, coordinate, and participate in health promotion and wellness initiatives, presenting clinically sound, evidence-based educational topics to engage and inform the campus community.
- Curate and maintain age-appropriate health education materials and resources to support campus outreach, prevention, and wellness activities.
- Ensure accurate and confidential documentation of all patient encounters, demonstrating proficient and appropriate use of the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned or directed to support departmental needs and align with the mission, values and goals of Student Health Services and Widener University.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university of nursing.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (CPR/AED).
- Two (2+) years of recent clinical experience in hospital, outpatient, or primary care settings.
- Demonstrated ability to perform independent clinical assessments, administer immunizations, and provide patient education.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Preferred:
- Experience in college health, public health, urgent care, or ambulatory care settings.
- Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems and documentation in a clinical setting.
- Knowledge of immunization and tuberculosis screening protocols, including pre-matriculation requirements for university populations.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing culturally competent care to a diverse student population.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:
- Must demonstrate flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing clinical and campus needs.
- Occasionally required to lift or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to move easily between sitting and standing positions and remain on feet for extended periods while providing patient care.
- Some evening or weekend hours may be required to support campus programming or respond to health-related emergencies.
