Widener University is seeking an Adjunct Professor in the Department of History in the Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences. The Adjunct Professor should be committed to excellence in teaching and student engagement. The successful candidate will bring demonstrated teaching experience and a collaborative spirit, contributing to a department and university community that values diversity.
This role will entail introductory-level global history surveys covering the period from 1500 to the present and/or a 300-level seminar in the candidate’s area of expertise. Part-time adjunct faculty may instruct 1 to 3 courses each semester on an “as needed” basis. Courses available for adjunct staffing are offered during the day. Adjunct faculty are expected to teach a specified course(s); prepare course materials, be available to meet with students outside of regularly scheduled class time, and provide support and guidance to students.
Required qualifications include a minimum of a master’s degree in history. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous undergraduate teaching experience, and willingness to be flexible in class scheduling. Complete applications are to include a cover letter, two sample global history syllabi (100-level and 300-level), and contact information for three professional references. This is a pooled position from which adjunct(s) will be hired. As openings occur, applicants will be hired from this pool.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach introductory-level global history survey courses covering the period from 1500 to the present.
- Teach upper-level (300-level) seminar in the candidate’s area of expertise.
- Adjunct History faculty at Widener enjoy a great deal of autonomy. They design their own syllabi and are free to implement their preferred pedagogy and techniques of their choosing within prevailing norms and best practices in the discipline.
- Stay current with historical research to ensure course content reflects the most recent academic findings.
- Fall courses are scheduled T/TH 12:30pm-1:45pm and 2:00pm-3:15pm (100-level) and 9:30am-10:45am (300-level). Courses will meet in person at the Chester, PA campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in History.
- Experience teaching global history at the undergraduate level.
- Strong oral and written communication and effective classroom management.
