Widener University is currently seeking a full-time, third-shift Campus Safety Sergeant.This position averages 40 hours per week, working 10-hour shifts from 11:00 PM to 9:00 AM, and primarily operates outdoors. Reporting to the on-duty Lieutenant, the Sergeant will lead a team of Campus Safety Officers and provide essential support, oversight, and direction. The role also includes primary supervision of all personnel assigned to the shift, including van and shuttle drivers, as well as student employees within the Office of Campus Safety.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):
- Serve as a designated Campus Security Authority (CSA) in accordance with the requirements of the Clery Act.
- Manage supervisory sector and the officers assigned to that area(s) providing guidance, direction, and support.
- Supervise the response for any calls for service and incidents that occur.
- Prepare reports accurately and objectively detailing incidents on campus.
- Review all reports submitted by officers during the shift to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to being relieved of duty.
- Fulfill the duties of the shift commander in the absence of the Lieutenant.
- Assist the Lieutenant to provide on-the-job training of all personnel assigned to the shift.
- Perform duties of a dispatcher or Campus Safety Officer as needed.
- Coordinate with local law enforcement and emergency services when necessary.
- Assist in the investigation and resolution of incidents.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
Secondary responsibilities:
- Flexibility to work additional shifts as needed or required, including but not limited to the dispatch office.
- Assist with University athletic/special events.
- Manage crowds during events or peak times to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
- Able to operate the Campus1Card system and distribute parking permits.
- Monitor and manage staffing levels to ensure adequate coverage.
- Schedule and coordinate shift assignments for officers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Driverβs License.
- Experience in a progressively responsible supervisory or customer service role.
- Experience with dispatch software and communication systems.
- Ability to foster positive relationships with the public through professional interactions.
- Ability to lead and organize a public safety team.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check to include the PA Criminal PA Child Abuse and FBI clearance.
Preferred:
- Experience working in higher education or a school environment.
- Law enforcement, military, campus or public safety experience.
- Familiarity with the local area and surrounding community.
- Knowledge of the Clery Act and associated regulations.
- Knowledge of criminal laws and departmental regulations and procedures.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:
- The ability to walk for extended periods of time.
- The ability to walk up and down steps both inside and outside of buildings.
- The ability to walk outdoors in your assigned area in all types of weather conditions.
- The ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time both inside and outside of buildings.
- The ability to lift objects weighing up to 55 lbs.
