The post holder will be an integral part of the Facilities team, assisting the Head of Facilities Management Contracts in the management of waste. Working collaboratively across multiple services, the role supports sustainability initiatives and broader trust objectives, contributing to the trust’s green plan delivery, carbon reduction, climate resilience and biodiversity targets.
Main Duties
- Responsibilities for communication: develop and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, secure buy‑in through persuasion and negotiation, represent the Trust as a subject‑matter expert, and provide specialist advice on environmental, sustainability and waste matters.
- Responsibilities for financial and physical resources: act as an authorised signatory, hold delegated budget, authorise payments to contractors and suppliers, audit and approve invoices, and challenge incorrect claims.
- Responsibilities for policy and service development: manage waste and environmental obligations, develop and update policies and procedures, monitor KPIs, and lead service specification work to ensure national, local and Trust targets are met.
- Leadership and management: provide proactive risk solution and escalation, support safety processes for waste contractors, and collaborate with internal teams and external providers to optimise infrastructure performance.
- Information resources: improve management information collection systems, provide accurate data for compliance and business cases, and submit statutory returns such as ERIC and PAM.
- Research and development: monitor new technologies and legislation for potential application to the trust’s estates and waste management.
Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification or equivalent in waste, sustainability, or environmental management.
- Membership or pursuing membership of CIWM, IEMA, ICRS or equivalent.
- Relevant professional experience in a corporate setting.
- Degree level education in environmental management or a related discipline.
- Management qualification or equivalent experience.
- BSc with knowledge of COSHH.
- Experience in healthcare waste management.
Skills & Abilities
- Experience managing and promoting the environmental agenda in a sustainability‑centric role or comparable position.
- Experience monitoring and managing carbon emissions and waste within a large organisation.
- Experience contract‑managing outsourced suppliers and services.
- Experience developing and implementing policies and strategies.
- Experience contributing to operational decision‑making.
- Experience managing delegated budgets and resources.
- Experience conducting risk assessments, environmental audits, surveys and developing action plans.
- Experience implementing financial, quality assurance and performance monitoring systems.
- Experience working in the built environment, ideally in a large acute hospital setting or within PFI‑led buildings.
- Experience bidding for external funding and grants.
Knowledge & Experience
- Good knowledge of the legal and practical aspects of waste management within an organisation.
- Comprehensive understanding of the waste hierarchy, mechanisms for reducing waste and monitoring against targets.
- Experience managing and monitoring external contractors.
- Experience collecting and analysing waste/recycling data.
- Experience delivering environmental training and awareness‑raising programmes.
- Experience working in a large, multi‑site organisation.
- Aware of relevant HTM standards, particularly HTM07.
