Speech and Language Therapist (Band 6 or Band 5 progressing to Band 6) - Haringey Learning Disabilities Service

The Haringey Learning Disabilities Speech and Language Therapy Team is looking for an enthusiastic Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist, with an exciting opportunity to progress to Band 6 within the role.

Main duties of the job

In this rewarding post, you will:

  • Deliver communication and dysphagia interventions to adults with learning disabilities
  • Receive structured supervision and support to develop skills in managing a complex caseload
  • Work with individuals with diverse and complex communication and swallowing needs
  • Provide training and guidance to paid carers, family members, and staff in community, day, and supported living services

You’ll be joining a supportive and experienced SLT team, including an SLT Assistant, and contributing to a range of multidisciplinary pathways across Haringey.

Person specification

  • MSC/Post Grad/BSc in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent (including Dip. CST)
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registration to Practice
  • Registered Member of RCSLT
  • NB for students just completing their training HCPC can be pending
  • Training relevant to client group e.g. Makaton, positive behaviour support, Intensive Interaction, dysphagia

Skills/abilities

  • Communicate complex, sensitive information

  • Awareness of adapting communication styles with different people

Previous Experience

  • Experience of working with adults with learning disabilities within clinical education or prior to training
  • Working as part of a team in a relevant setting
  • Administrative tasks, including record keeping and note writing
  • Supervision and following goals set by supervisor

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of a range of assessment tools and procedures to evaluate communication and speech & language relevant to adults with learning disabilities
  • Knowledge of key characteristics leading to a basic differential diagnosis relevant to the client group
  • Knowledge of selecting, setting & evaluating goals for intervention
  • Knowledge of basic therapeutic interventions relevant to adults and young people with learning disabilities
  • Knowledge of local cultural, linguistic & demographic factors affecting client management
  • Understanding of multi-disciplinary team approaches
  • Understanding of applicable policy and statutory frameworks relevant to learning disabilities
  • Knowledge of safeguarding
  • Knowledge and understanding of Education Health and Social Care plans and how an SLT may contribute
  • Knowledge of approaches to support clients & carers with behaviour that challenges, mental health needs or autism
  • Basic approaches to support clients with dysphagia
  • Knowledge of accessible information
