Islington Additional Needs and Disability Team (IANDS) is a multidisciplinary service for children and young people 0‑19, supporting babies, children and young people with additional needs and disabilities.

Main duties

We are looking for a Special School Nurse to be part of our special schools team, including Richard Cloudesley School. The role involves managing health care – enteral feeds, diabetes, epilepsy and medication – and supporting students to achieve optimum health and access a wide educational curriculum.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the special school multi‑agency team, sharing information and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Assist children and young people with a variety of special needs to obtain optimum health and access a wide educational curriculum.
  • Act as a resource and point of contact representing the Special School Nursing services to internal and external agencies.
  • Maintain accurate school records through the electronic health notes system.

Clinical Responsibility

  • Assess health needs of children and young people entering special schools in consultation with health visitors and other professionals.
  • Participate in health surveillance programmes, including annual reviews, assessing developmental progress and health needs.
  • Provide support in short staffing situations to children and young people with complex learning and physical needs.
  • Ensure accurate health records and make recommendations for referrals, treatment or review.
  • Attend child protection supervision meetings with safeguarding advisors.
  • Perform financial transactions in accordance with Trust instruction.
  • Maintain stock control for schools, supervising ordering and recording by the healthcare assistant.

Service Development and Improvement

  • Implement policies and procedures as determined by IANDS.
  • Highlight service provision problems to Leadership to identify unmet needs and gaps.
  • Undertake surveys or audits as directed.
  • Ensure work areas comply with Health and Safety Guidelines and maintain safe use of equipment.

Responsibility for Dealing with Difficult Situations

  • Work regularly with children and young people with complex emotional, social and behavioural difficulties.
  • Deal sensitively with pupils, parents, carers and families who may be distressed.

Revalidation and Registration

  • Act within the Professional Bodies Code of Practice.
  • Maintain personal work profile to ensure revalidation standards are met and assist junior staff in achieving revalidation.
  • Contribute to development of colleagues' professional practice across the Trust through leading projects and supporting training.

Infection control

All staff prevent and control infections within Whittington, ensuring compliance with hand hygiene, dress code, and MRSA screening policies.

Safeguarding

  • Compliance with the Trust’s Safeguarding Children and Adults policies and protocols.
  • Familiarity with London Child Protection procedures and local safeguarding protocols.
  • Know appropriate contact numbers and required reporting lines.
  • Participate in required training and supervision.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and codes of conduct.

Qualifications

  • RSCN or RN (Child Branch)
  • Evidence of post‑registration training and development

Experience

  • Recent experience working with children and families with complex needs.
  • Experience with learning disabilities and autism.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
