Lead Pharmacy Technician – Clinical Services in London

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Lead Pharmacy Technician – Clinical Services to join our Pharmacy team at Whittington Health. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a skilled pharmacy technician to take a key role in shaping and delivering high-quality medicines management and clinical pharmacy services across the Trust.

You will lead a team of Medicines Management Pharmacy Technicians and Assistants, supporting service development, workforce planning, and continuous improvement to ensure safe, effective, and patient‐centred care. We are looking for a proactive and committed GPhC-registered Pharmacy Technician with experience across all areas of pharmacy, particularly within clinical pharmacy services in an NHS acute setting at a senior level. The successful candidate will have excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.

• Provide leadership and line management to the Medicines Management team.
• Lead the delivery and development of clinical pharmacy and medicines management services.
• Support service improvement, SOP development, and governance processes.
• Work collaboratively with pharmacists, ward teams, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
• Ensure safe and effective use of medicines across clinical areas.
• Lead on training, education, and workforce development of pharmacy staff.
• Contribute to audit, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.

• Provide leadership and line management to the Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician team, ensuring appropriate staffing, performance management, and staff development.
• Promote a positive working environment that supports teamwork, continuous improvement, and delivery of Trust objectives.
• Act as a role model and provide visible leadership, supporting staff to achieve their goals and maintain high professional standards.
• Oversee recruitment, workforce planning, appraisals, and training needs within the team.
• Participate as an active member of the Senior Pharmacy Technician Group.
• Lead the delivery and ongoing development of medicines management and clinical pharmacy services across inpatient areas.
• Ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are in place, regularly reviewed, and adhered to.
• Identify opportunities for service improvement, innovation, and modernisation of pharmacy services.
• Support the achievement of performance targets, including Cost Improvement Programmes (CIP).
• Oversee the provision of medicines management services to a range of clinical specialties.
• Ensure safe and effective use of medicines, including accurate medicines reconciliation, supply, and discharge processes.
• Lead ward‐based pharmacy technician services, ensuring efficient stock management and compliance with medicines storage standards.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to optimise patient outcomes and resolve medicines‐related issues.
• Maintain Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) competency through regular dispensary practice.
• Support the monitoring and investigation of medication incidents and implement improvements to reduce risk.
• Lead and participate in audits, ensuring compliance with local and national standards.
• Ensure robust systems are in place for medicines storage, supply, and safety.
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and patient safety strategies.
• Lead the education, training, and competency assessment of pharmacy technicians, assistants, and trainees.
• Act as an Education Supervisor where appropriate.
• Support induction programmes and ongoing professional development within the team.
• Deliver training on medicines management to pharmacy and multidisciplinary staff.
• Support the day‐to‐day operational running of pharmacy clinical services, ensuring continuity and resilience.
• Provide ward and dispensary cover where required.
• Work flexibly to meet service demands and organisational priorities.
• Maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and comply with professional standards.
• Undertake continuing professional development (CPD) and support team members in achieving their revalidation requirements.
• Ensure compliance with Trust policies, including safeguarding, infection control, and information governance.

• BTEC/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical sciences.
• Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
• Completion of a recognised management course/clinical course.

• Highly competent in medicines management tasks.
• Highly developed communication skills (written and verbal).

• Demonstrable significant post qualification experience in the acute NHS sector.
• Experience of line management/leading teams.
• Knowledge of medicines management initiatives.

• Ensure you are familiar with and comply with the London Child Protection Procedures and protocols for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
• Ensure you are familiar and comply with the London Multi Agency Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Pan London Procedures.
• Ensure you are familiar and comply with local protocols and systems for information sharing.
• Know the appropriate contact numbers and required reporting lines.
• Participate in required training and supervision.
• Comply with required professional boundaries and codes of conduct.
