The Acute Oncology Service (AOS) delivers expert advice, support and leadership to ensure patients presenting with oncological concerns receive safe and effective care.
Responsibilities include working in partnership with oncology clinical colleagues – including the chemotherapy team, palliative care, acute medicine, A & E, radiology and pathology – to provide high‑quality continuity of care for patients with a cancer diagnosis or suspected cancer requiring urgent interventions.
As a core member of the AOS, you will provide specialty oncology care in both inpatient and outpatient settings for patients presenting with:
- Oncological emergencies
- Complications of cancer treatment
- Complications of cancer diagnosis
- A new cancer diagnosis
You will work within the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients who present via the malignancy of unknown origin (MUO) and cancer of unknown primary (CUP) pathways have rapid oncology input, avoiding unnecessary and inappropriate investigations and facilitating timely treatment.
Additional responsibilities include supporting the teenage and young adult (TYA) cancer pathways and providing cross‑cover for lone‑working oncology clinical nurse specialist services within the Trust.
The role requires you to assess complex patients autonomously, provide specialist support, advice, information and interventions, and manage both in‑patient, out‑patient and telephone assessment of patients at home. You will monitor investigation results, initiate and escalate further assessment or review of treatment pathways as required, prioritise and review patients according to their needs, and identify when consultant review or escalation of clinical decisions is warranted.
Utilising clinical expertise, evidence‑based research and guidelines, you will support valid clinical judgement and employ advanced communication, listening and negotiation skills to facilitate discussion of highly complex, sensitive and emotive issues relating to cancer diagnosis, disease management, recurrence or progressive disease and prognosis. You will be accountable for your actions in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
Qualifications include being a registered nurse with experience working in oncology, cancer, SACT or palliative care, demonstrated ability to work autonomously in a complex clinical environment, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
