Job overview
We are recruiting a Highly Specialist CAMHS Clinician to the Adolescent Support and Intervention Project (ASIP) who is committed to and passionate about integrated multi-agency working, sharing mental health and psychological knowledge and skills with practitioners from a range of backgrounds.
ASIP was developed with London Borough of Islington’s (LBI) children’s services to prevent teenagers most at risk from contextual safeguarding from becoming looked after. The team includes local authority case workers, team manager and a highly specialist CAMHS clinician.
The team’s approach is flexible and draws on community psychology principles and AMBIT (Adaptive Mentalization Based Integrative Treatment). The post is commissioned by LBI to provide integrated clinical and psychological thinking to ASIP team and wider workforce to contribute to the quality of the understanding and management of risk for young people.
This post would suit a values-led practitioner who is creative, dynamic, confident and flexible, with a commitment to community psychology and outreach working for some of the most vulnerable families in the borough.
This post is also connected to a small team of clinicians integrated within other local authority teams, overseen by the CAMHS Clinical Service Manager. We offer a highly supportive team culture, which values team learning.

Main duties of the job
- Supporting ASIP intensive workers and case-holding social workers via consultation and joint working.
- Psychological formulations of young people and families, including neurodevelopmental difficulties, trauma and attachment.
- Direct work with young people and families.
- Supporting the development of practice-based evidence for working with young people, and their families within a framework of contextual safeguarding.
- It is a requirement of the role to be co-located with Islington Children’s Services at 222 Upper Street, N1 1XR.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The ASIP team sits within the local authority Exploitation and Missing Service and includes local authority case workers, team manager and a highly specialist CAMHS clinician. The team’s approach is flexible and draws on community psychology principles and AMBIT (Adaptive Mentalization Based Integrative Treatment); meeting the families and young people where they are at to increase access to support and strengthening the existing network surrounding the family.
The post involves:
- Working with multiple partner agencies including children’s social care, the youth justice and probation services and the Islington Collaboration Action Network (ICAN) to facilitate joint working with ASIP and providing consultation and training.
- In collaboration with the ASIP Team Manager, the post holder will lead regular group supervision, case discussions, reflective practice and training for members of the team.
- Direct work – provide specialist psychological assessment and some clinical interventions to young people and their families with an emphasis on ensuring that the young person can remain living in their home. Work with families in their homes and in community settings.
- Draw on motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed practice as core elements of Islington’s motivational practice social work model.
- Key role in supporting the development of practice-based evidence for working with young people, and their families within a framework of contextual safeguarding.
- Fully embedded within the ASIP team, operationally managed within that team.
Person specification
Education/Qualifications
- A professional qualification in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, Child Psychotherapy, Systemic and Family psychotherapy or other core mental health discipline.
- Registration with relevant professional body (e.g. HCPC, NMC, ACP, UKCP).
- Further post qualifying training in psychological models or approaches e.g. Mentalisation models, community psychology, trauma informed and attachment-based approaches etc.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to apply a highly collaborative, team-based model of working to deliver high quality health care to marginalised, disadvantaged and underserved young people and their families in non-health settings.
- Skills in the use of evidence based and culturally-sensitive methods of mental health assessment, integrative formulation and interventions with children and young people and families.
- Skills in effectively assessing and managing mental health and safeguarding risk, including supporting others to manage high risk contextual safeguarding situations.
- Ability to form good working relationships to work flexibly and creatively with others in a multidisciplinary and multi-agency setting.
- Skills in effective, culturally sensitive communication, orally and in writing, of complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
- Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice.
- Skills in forensic risk assessments and developing management plans.
Knowledge & Experience
- Knowledge and experience of generic and targeted mental health assessments and interventions with adolescents, children and families, taking into consideration needs relating to equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Knowledge and experience of working with young people and families who may not be able to access mainstream services, presenting with complex help seeking behaviour, in the context of multiple needs and difficult experiences with services.
- Experience of working with young people and their families where there are suspected/undiagnosed neurodevelopmental needs, developmental trauma, poor parental mental health, contextual safeguarding concerns.
- Experience of forming good joint-working relationships with colleagues in multi-agency community settings (including education and local authority) who may not have mental health backgrounds.
- Knowledge and experience of service development and delivering quality improvement innovations within the workplace, including QI frameworks.
- Knowledge of legislation, guidance, frameworks and national policies relevant to children and young people and multi-agency practice e.g. Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023. Contextual safeguarding frameworks.
- High level knowledge of relevant psychological and mental health theory and practice relating to for young people who engage in anti-social and offending behaviour.
- Knowledge and skills in use of AMBIT (Adaptive Mentalization Based Integrative Treatment), Trauma Informed Practice and Systemic approaches.
- Knowledge and experience of relevant models/frameworks for facilitating group case consultation and reflective practice.
Personal Qualities
- Passion for working creatively with children and families who present with complex social, emotional and behavioural needs.
- Willingness to work outside of core working hours (9 – 5.00 pm) on an occasional basis to support engagement with families.
