Highly Specialised Physiotherapist –Neurology/Complex Multi-Pathology

We are seeking a committed Band 7 Physiotherapist with experience in neurology and a complex multi‑pathology caseload. The role requires advanced clinical assessment skills, autonomous treatment planning, and the ability to support patient flow, discharge planning and multidisciplinary teamwork.

Main duties of the job:

• Lead the physiotherapy management of patients presenting with neurological conditions (e.g. traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, progressive neurological disease).
• Provide evidence‑based assessment and treatment, including acute and complex presentations, and manage a caseload autonomously.
• Collaborate closely with the Highly Specialised OT and the Neuro AHP MDT to agree patient‑centred goals, select appropriate outcome measures and deliver timely interventions.
• Support patient flow by providing rapid assessment, discharge recommendations and coordinating home‑based support or inpatient rehabilitation.
• In‑reach patients in the Intensive Care Unit for physiotherapy advice/intervention when a prolonged ITU stay threatens functional deterioration.
• Train and develop ward staff in neuro‑physiotherapy assessment and treatment, enabling effective ward‑level management of patients and serving as the expert resource for staff.

Person specification:

Education and qualifications:

• Hold a recognised degree or diploma in Physiotherapy.
• Current HCPC registration.
• Evidenced post‑graduate courses or training to post‑graduate degree/diploma level.
• IELTS Level 7 – essential for overseas applicants.
• Completed CPD in line with HCPC registration requirements.
• Member of relevant clinical special interest groups/sections.
• Completed introductory leadership/management course.

Experience:

• Board‑level experience at least at band 6 in physiotherapy, managing neurological and complex needs in acute or rehabilitation settings.
• Post‑graduate clinical experience in neurosciences, neuro‑trauma, and acquired neurological conditions within the NHS.
• Comprehensive neurological assessment and treatment, including multi‑pathology presentations.
• Autonomous management of a clinically complex caseload.
• Collaboration with statutory and third‑sector providers and agencies.
• Advocacy for patients within the MDT and wider system partners.
• Formal and informal teaching, supervision and appraisal of staff and students.
• Neurological upper and lower limb management, including spasticity management.
• Rehabilitation in an ITU setting.
• Promotion of the physiotherapy role within an MDT environment.

Knowledge:

• Highly specialist knowledge of physiotherapy in neurological conditions.
• Familiarity with standardised and non‑standardised assessments and treatment approaches for neurological presentations.
• Understanding of relevant clinical guidelines and best evidence for therapy in neurological conditions.
• Knowledge of statutory and non‑statutory services supporting neurological impairment and complex disability management.
• Understanding of quality improvement, audit processes and practical application.
• Knowledge of equipment for mobility, seating, positioning, splinting and pressure care for complex disability management.
• Risk assessment and risk management in clinical practice.
• HR processes relating to staff performance and absence management.

Skills & abilities:

• Analytical ability to interpret complex clinical and non‑clinical situations.
• Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise a caseload.
• Consistent and effective supervision, delegation and monitoring of team members and students.
• Clear verbal and written communication, including complex information presentation.
• Capability to deliver training across disciplines.
• Intermediate computer and IT skills.
• Experience in quality improvement work and implementing change.

Other qualities:

• Experience in the NHS or equivalent UK setting.
• Physical ability for manual handling of patients and moderate effort for extended periods.
• Flexibility and adaptability to meet service needs.
• Availability for core hours and pro‑rata on‑call/ weekend rota.
• Documentation of continuous professional development in line with HCPC standards.
• Capacity to work under pressure in acute environments with challenging patients.

• Familiar with London Multi‑Agency Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Pan‑London Procedures.
• Familiar with local protocols and systems for information sharing.
