The postholder will provide specialist technical expertise in the maintenance, performance assurance, risk management and life cycle planning of the imaging modalities, including X‑ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, mammography, CT, MRI, theatres C‑arms and dental imaging. The role oversees the full lifecycle of imaging assets—from specification and procurement through to commissioning, maintenance, quality assurance and decommissioning. They will act as the Trust’s senior technical specialist for imaging devices, supporting clinical services, advising on equipment selection and governance and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks including MHRA, IR(ME)R and IEC standards and Trust Medical Devices Policy.
Main duties include:
- Managing maintenance contracts and technologists.
- Delivering corrective and preventive maintenance.
- Performing acceptance and overseeing QA testing.
- Leading investigations and supporting procurement.
- Ensuring compliance with safety legislation.
- Maintaining oversight of the imaging asset register and ensuring accurate data recording.
- Leading PPM and corrective maintenance of all imaging equipment.
- Responding to and resolving unplanned equipment faults quickly to minimise downtime.
- Providing first‑line diagnosis of failures, liaising with OEM engineers when needed.
- Supporting Radiographers in resolving operational issues.
- Attending Radiology meetings, Medical Device Committee meetings and capital planning sessions as a technical advisor.
- Contract managing for maintenance and ensuring standards compliance.
- Performing complex fault diagnosis using specialised tools and OEM documentation.
- Overseeing Imaging QA, acceptance testing and safety assessments in line with IRR17, IR(ME)R17 and MHRA guidance.
- Managing lifecycle planning, procurement input and installation oversight.
- Producing reports to support capital bids including risk‑based prioritisation.
- Supporting PACS/RIS integration and imaging network considerations.
- Supervising, training and mentoring junior technologists and apprentices.
- Acting as senior technical contact for RPAs, Radiology and, if required, other clinical areas.
- Maintaining accurate CMMS records and documentation.
- Approving and reviewing service reports and ensuring these are stored in the local CMMS.
- Leading projects relating to service development and medical device evaluation.
- Assisting in medical device incident investigations including data extraction.
- Ensuring safe retrieval, handling and return of equipment.
- Participating in internal audits, governance and departmental meetings.
- Adhering to all Trust and department policies and procedures.
- Assisting the Head of Clinical Engineering in conducting periodic internal audits.
- Deputising for the Head of Clinical Engineering in their absence.
- Undertaking suppliers and external training courses to establish competency for a wide range of medical devices.
- Participating in departmental training events and gaining further experience under senior supervision.
- Engaging in annual appraisals, identifying strengths, weaknesses and professional development.
- Serving as the point of contact for all technical queries relating to corrective and preventive maintenance.
- Contributing to the supervision of newly appointed staff and coordinating manufacturer training.
- Supervising all technical staff in the Clinical Engineering Department, potentially leading a team.
- Using a wide range of test and measurement equipment to diagnose and correct faults on complex equipment at module or component level.
- Developing junior colleagues’ skills to enable independent work on new medical devices once competency is signed off.
- Communicating with senior nursing and clinical staff regarding configuration control for medical devices.
Person specification includes relevant qualifications such as MEng, knowledge/experience of medical equipment or healthcare environment, and previous experience in a similar role, preferably in the NHS or public sector.
