Whittington Mortuary Services includes a busy hospital mortuary and a public mortuary for the London Borough of Islington, fully licensed by the Human Tissue Authority. The mortuary provides high-standard autopsy services to the hospital and H.M. Coroner, and offers CT scan autopsies to police and the wider community.

Responsibilities

  • Support the hospital Medical Examiner system by administering documentation for patients who die within the hospital and the local community.
  • Carry out technical work, including management of the autopsy suite and body handling area as directed by the mortuary manager and senior Anatomical Pathology Technician.
  • Assist the mortuary management team in monitoring workflow, supervising and training junior staff.
  • Arrange ‘Public Health’ funerals on behalf of the borough of Islington.
  • Deputise for the mortuary manager and senior APT during periods of leave.
  • Complete required audits and attend regular meetings.
  • Promote and adhere to Health and Safety standards by conducting relevant training and attending suitable courses.
  • Liaise with pathologists, hospital personnel, the H.M. Coroner, funeral directors, police, members of the public, and other professionals.
  • Maintain a sensitive and caring attitude toward bereaved families and friends.
  • Follow departmental operating procedures, health and safety guidelines, and other policies, ensuring standards are maintained.
  • Participate in the ‘Out of Hours’ on-call system.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalent.
  • Motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible, with the ability to work in a challenging and sensitive environment.
  • Calm and professional attitude when dealing with emotional and distressing situations.

Working Conditions

The mortuary operates 8 am–4 pm Monday to Friday, but hours may be flexible to accommodate early autopsy schedules, which can begin before 6 am.
