An exciting opportunity for a Consultant Dermatologist, Dermatology Specialist Doctor or GPwER Dermatologist to join the Community Dermatology Service covering patients registered within Kent and Medway. The service aims to provide an innovative, high‑quality, consultant‑led service, delivering accessible, efficient care and managing the majority of diagnostics, outpatient and surgical activity within primary care settings across Whitstable, Canterbury, Folkestone, Thanet and Sittingbourne.

The team currently includes 4 Specialist Dermatology Doctors, 3 Consultant Dermatologists, 6 GPwER Dermatologists, 3 Trainee GPwER Dermatologists and 5 Specialist Nurses.

Main Duties

  • Provide assessment, investigation and treatment for dermatology patients of all ages, excluding 2WW referrals, connective tissue disorders, leg ulcers and systemic illnesses.
  • Deliver a full diagnostic service including phlebotomy, biopsy, swab taking, cryotherapy and reporting of results.
  • Ensure high‑quality, accessible service with consultant oversight, meeting NICE guidance and best practice.
  • Refer to hospital only for cases that cannot be seen in the community, such as acutely unwell patients, diagnostic uncertainty or need for hospital‑based treatments (e.g., biologics, patch testing, light therapy).
  • Provide clinical triage for all referrals to the dermatology pathway and manage cases in line with local referral pathways.
  • Offer detailed management plans to GP referers and follow up as appropriate.
  • Support patients in skin‑disease management, self‑care and prevention, and provide education.
  • Develop integrated pathways and communication across primary and secondary care.
  • Deliver care closer to home to reduce acute referrals.

Service Objectives (Key Outcomes)

  • Deliver high‑quality, consultant‑supported GPwER service.
  • Operate a one‑stop shop, providing assessment and treatment in same appointment.
  • Maximise joint working with key specialties for patients with associated conditions (rheumatology, diabetes).

Qualifications

  • Essential: Relevant qualifications for your staff grade.
  • Desirable: Evidence of additional qualifications.

Experience

  • Essential: Proven experience providing high‑quality care; knowledge of outpatient dermatology and acute dermatoses; expert opinion on dermatological problems; independent responsibility for patient care; understanding of Clinical Governance; good IT skills.
  • Desirable: Experience working independently within a primary care environment.

Aptitudes

  • Essential: Ability to work as a team member; acceptance of management and administrative duties within a team; effective communication with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and agencies; commitment to Continuing Medical Education and Clinical Governance; flexible working attitude.
  • Desirable: Good personal interactive communication skills – clarity of expression and purpose.
