Whitstable Medical Practice is seeking a non-list-bearing Salaried GP position focused on delivering same day urgent clinical care within a primary care setting. The postholder will assess, diagnose and manage patients presenting with acute and episodic healthcare needs, delivering high-quality general medical services and ensuring safe, effective and timely care for all registered patients. The role is designed to support responsive patient access and does not include responsibility for a personal patient list or routine continuity clinics.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the Partners in delivering a responsive same day care service and to manage a varied and clinically interesting acute workload within our GMS Practice.
  • The postholder will contribute to delivering safe, effective and patient-centred care while maintaining high clinical standards and supporting wider practice objectives.

About us

Whitstable Medical Practice is a forward-thinking single practice Primary Care Network (PCN) GP Practice based across 3 sites in Whitstable. There are 24 equity GP partners looking after over 45,000 patients. There are also 17 Allied Health Professionals directly employed including Clinical Pharmacy Team, Frailty Practitioners, Social Prescribers, First Contact Physiotherapists and Mental Health Practitioners. We pride ourselves on our innovative approach to Primary Care. We are a training practice and run various in-house contracts including Cataract surgery, Ultrasound, Dermatology, Physical Therapies and Audiology together with further community contracts, a Day Surgery Suite and an Urgent Treatment Centre with digital x-ray.

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In accordance with the practice timetable, undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, urgent appointments, telephone consultations, clinical queries, triage and clinical decision-making.
  • Assess, diagnose and manage acute presentations and same day care requirements within agreed clinical pathways.
  • Authorise and process repeat prescriptions and respond to associated prescription queries.
  • Complete referral letters (NHS and private).
  • Make professional and autonomous clinical decisions in relation to presenting problems whether self-referred or referred by other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain accurate, clear and contemporaneous computer-based consultation records in accordance with agreed standards.
  • Collect and contribute clinical data for audit and quality improvement purposes.
  • Prescribe in accordance with local and national prescribing guidance.
  • Participate in safeguarding processes and identify safeguarding concerns appropriately.
  • Undertake all duties expected of a GP working within primary care appropriate to the role.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE PRACTICE

  • Contribute to the teaching, support and development of doctors, nurses and wider clinical teams where appropriate.
  • Maintain awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies and procedures including prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety, CQC standards and Quality and Outcomes Framework requirements.
  • Demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning, reflective practice and evidence-based medicine.
  • Maintain a professional appraisal and development portfolio.
  • Contribute to audit, evaluation and clinical standard setting within the organisation.
  • Support the development and effective use of electronic patient records.
  • Attend training, Practice meetings and events organised by the Practice or external agencies as appropriate.
  • Meet agreed timescales and deadlines for audits and contractual returns to support achievement of practice quality standards and contractual requirements.

In the course of carrying out duties, the post holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients, carers, practice staff and other healthcare professionals. All such information must be treated as strictly confidential and handled in accordance with Practice policies, UK GDPR, Data Protection legislation and professional obligations. Patients entrust the Practice with sensitive information and all staff are expected to respect patient confidentiality and maintain professional standards at all times.

  • Effectively manage workload, time and resources while contributing positively to team performance.

COMMUNICATION

  • The postholder will communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and external agencies.
  • Communicate sensitively and effectively with patients and carers.
  • Recognise and support alternative communication needs where required.
  • Contribute to effective multidisciplinary working.

CONTRIBUTION TO SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

  • The postholder will apply Practice policies, standards and guidance consistently.
  • Participate in audit and service improvement activities.
  • Work with Partners and the Management Team to achieve agreed standards, performance measures and objectives.
  • Support implementation of new policies, procedures and service developments in line with NHS England, the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and relevant legislation.

Person Specification

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Understanding of the pressures faced by GPs and healthcare teams.

Qualifications

  • Qualified GP.
  • Current GMC Registration.
  • Appropriate representation with a recognised Medical Defence Organisation.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

£11,500 to £12,000 a session depending on experience, per annum.
