Our client is one of the world's leading manufacturers of functional textiles in window blind fabrics and systems, looking to recruit a Shift Chemist to join a fast-paced laboratory in the Greater Manchester area. The role is to assist in the development of coating formulations and to monitor the performance achieved. The successful candidate will work with the team on the development of new projects, the introduction of new formulations, products and procedures ensuring that all documentation and samples are accurately recorded.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the development of fabric coating formulations (flat and foamed), and to measure and monitor the performance achieved.
  • Ensuring that all development and testing work is fully documented in a clear, logical and systematic format.
  • Responsibility for the correct implementation of recipes and procedures for the production mixing plant.
  • Assistance with the development of new formulations, products and procedures, on the coating and mixing plant.
  • Ensure correct training with the Production Managers and operators in safe handling and the use of PPE where applicable.
  • To assist the Chemist and Q.C. Manager with Q.C. systems and procedures within the laboratory and production departments.
  • To gain a detailed understanding of the systems and operational running of the mixing department and colour kitchen.
  • To monitor and liaise with the Chief Chemist regarding chemical stock inventory, storage requirements, and the safe storage of chemical products within the warehouse in collaboration with the Fabric Warehouse Manager.
  • To ensure an accurate and current database of chemical MSDS is maintained.
  • To assist in the training of both Management and Operatives in the correct and safe use of chemicals, mixing systems, and formulation used.
  • To undertake any other projects as defined by the General Manager, including Environmental and Health & Safety.
  • To ensure accurate and detailed records of all routine laboratory testing.

Candidate profile:

  • All applicants must be educated to minimum HNC/degree level.
  • Knowledge of colour chemistry and/or polymer coating chemistry.
  • Textile industry knowledge is desirable.
  • Previous experience in a technical environment would be beneficial.
  • The successful candidate will have strong analytic skills, be organized and accurate when maintaining records, have excellent communication skills and be able to meet deadlines.

Hours of work will be on an alternating 2 shift pattern (06:00 – 15:00 / 13:00 – 22:00) Monday to Friday (40 hour week). 28 days holiday including statutory, Pension, Life Assurance.
