We are recruiting an experienced Transport Manager to oversee a busy container transport operation based in Ipswich. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong container transport experience who is confident managing drivers, coordinating daily movements and maintaining high service standards within a demanding logistics environment. The operation runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Although the standard working hours for this position are Monday to Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, the successful candidate must understand the demands of a round-the-clock transport operation and be comfortable dealing with occasional issues outside normal working hours.

The Role

You will be responsible for managing the day-to-day container transport operation, ensuring collections and deliveries are completed efficiently, safely and on time. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a busy container transport operation
  • Overseeing a mixture of employed drivers and subcontracted drivers
  • Planning and coordinating container collections and deliveries
  • Allocating work to drivers and external hauliers
  • Monitoring driver progress throughout the day
  • Ensuring vehicles and drivers are used efficiently
  • Managing changes, delays and operational issues
  • Communicating with customers, drivers, subcontractors and internal departments
  • Maintaining high levels of customer service
  • Ensuring all transport instructions are accurate and clearly communicated
  • Managing driver availability, holidays and operational cover
  • Monitoring subcontractor service levels and performance
  • Ensuring transport activity is completed safely and compliantly
  • Supporting the wider operation during demanding or time-critical periods
  • Driving improvements across planning, service and operational performance

The Candidate

The successful candidate must have:

  • Strong experience within container transport or container haulage
  • Previous experience managing or supervising a transport operation
  • Experience managing both employed and subcontracted drivers
  • A good understanding of container collections and deliveries
  • Strong transport planning and organisational skills
  • The ability to work effectively in a demanding and fast-moving environment
  • Excellent communication and people-management skills
  • The confidence to make decisions and resolve problems quickly
