We are seeking a part time Payroll Officer to manage the end-to-end processing of a large, complex in-house monthly payroll. This is a key role requiring exceptional accuracy, discretion, and the confidence to work to tight deadlines in a professional environment. This role will be around 20-25 hours, worked across 3-5 days.
Key Responsibilities
- End-to-end processing of monthly payroll, ensuring accuracy and timely payments
- Maintaining payroll systems and posting monthly journals to the nominal ledger
- Processing starters, leavers, contractual changes, absence, term-time adjustments, pay awards, student loans, and tax code updates
- Preparing BACS submissions, payslips, P45s and P60s
- Submitting statutory returns to HMRC, pension providers, and other external bodies, including P11Ds and PSA submissions
- Administering staff benefits and pension schemes, ensuring auto-enrolment compliance
- Responding promptly to payroll, pension, and benefits queries from staff and external authorities
- Producing payroll reports, reconciliations, and data to support budgeting, forecasting, and statutory reporting
- Supporting the implementation of a new HR and payroll system and driving process improvements
Essential Criteria
- Proven experience running a large, complex in-house payroll end to end
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, HMRC regulations, and employment law
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and numeracy
- Excellent IT skills, particularly Excel, and experience with payroll systems
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work under pressure to deadlines
