About The Role

We're looking for a driven and passionate individual to join us as an Economist. As part of the Strategic Insight team, you'll work alongside other economists, data analysts, data scientists and social researchers to produce the evidence that drives Which?'s programme of advocacy activities, shaping priorities and evaluating impact, while primarily producing high‑quality economic insight that holds businesses to account and influences government and regulator action in the best interests of consumers.

You will produce high‑quality economic insight that determines our policy positions and will be used to support our purpose of championing consumers. You will be given the autonomy to explore different methodologies and develop innovative research and analysis. You'll work closely with colleagues in our public affairs teams to understand the needs of our audiences and make sure your work has the reach it needs.

Our Strategic Insight team is key to helping us understand whether markets deliver good outcomes for consumers. We have an enviable track record of delivering for consumers. Our economic research has been used by the government in impact assessments for the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill to make the case to regulate Big Tech and to ban fake online reviews, and by Ofcom to support its decision to ban the use of inflation‑linked mid‑contract price rises in contracts.

To build on this success, we're looking to recruit an Economist with proven analytical skills and a desire for their work to have impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use economic theory to inform Which?'s policy positions and provide insight into consumer behaviour and the wider economic environment;
  • Work both autonomously on your own initiative and collaboratively with other research disciplines including policy researchers and data scientists;
  • Analyse economic data to generate compelling and original insight into the attitudes and behaviours of UK consumers;
  • Identify the relevant insights from economic analyses and communicate these in a technically precise, but accessible and compelling way to persuade internal and external stakeholders, including policymakers, regulators and businesses.

For a full list of essential requirements, please refer to the role profile, which can be downloaded as a PDF at the bottom of this advert.

About You

  • Experience of applying microeconomic analysis to produce evidence‑based outputs and a proven ability to create insight through intelligent and robust analysis.
  • Experience of applying statistical / econometric analysis to produce evidence‑based outputs.
  • Understanding and experience of how economics is used in policymaking and experience of conducting analysis to inform public policy.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to convey complex information with clarity to a non‑technical audience.
