Position: General Manager

ROLE OVERVIEW
Due to internal progression across our expanding pub business, we are now on the lookout for an experienced, commercially focused and passionate General Manager to take full ownership of one of our busy pubs situated in the heart of The City.
This is a hands-on leadership role with responsibility for the complete day-to-day operation of the business, including sales, profitability, people, customer experience, licensing, stock, labour control and operational standards.
We are looking for someone who treats the venue as their own business driving sales, developing their team, maintaining excellent standards and constantly looking for opportunities to improve performance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
COMMERCIAL PERFORMANCE & SALES
Take full ownership of the financial and operational performance of the venue.
Drive weekly sales and identify opportunities to grow the business.
Understand the venues local market, customers and competitors.
Develop initiatives to increase footfall, frequency of visits and customer spend.
Maximise opportunities around sport, entertainment, events and key trading dates.
Monitor weekly sales performance against targets and previous periods.
Understand and manage controllable costs.
Deliver agreed labour, stock and profitability targets.
Take action quickly when performance falls below expectations.
PEOPLE & LEADERSHIP
Recruit, train, motivate and retain a strong venue team.
Lead from the front and maintain a visible management presence.
Create clear expectations and accountability throughout the team.
Produce effective rotas based on forecast sales and business requirements.
Control labour costs without compromising service or operational standards.
Conduct team inductions, training, reviews and performance management.
Develop Assistant Managers and future leaders within the business.
Deal professionally and consistently with performance, conduct and attendance issues.
Create a positive working environment where employees understand what is expected of them.
CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
Ensure customers receive consistently excellent service.
Maintain a welcoming, safe and professional environment.
Deal with customer feedback and complaints quickly and appropriately.
Develop strong relationships with regular customers and the local community.
Maintain a strong management presence during peak trading periods.
STOCK & FINANCIAL CONTROL
Take responsibility for stock management and stock results.
Ensure deliveries, transfers, wastage and stock movements are correctly controlled.
Investigate stock discrepancies and implement corrective action.
Maintain strong cash-handling and banking procedures.
Monitor discounts, refunds, voids and other till activity.
Protect the business against unnecessary loss, waste and theft.
Understand weekly financial performance and take action to improve results.
STANDARDS & COMPLIANCE
Maintain exceptional front-of-house, back-of-house, cellar and external standards.
Ensure opening and closing procedures are consistently completed.
Maintain excellent cellar management and product quality.
Ensure all food safety, health & safety and fire safety requirements are followed.
Ensure the venue operates in accordance with its Premises Licence.
Maintain Challenge 25 and responsible alcohol retailing procedures.
Ensure required checks, records and compliance documentation are completed accurately.
Identify maintenance issues and ensure they are reported and followed through.
MARKETING & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Actively promote the venue within the local community.
Maintain an engaging and consistent social media presence.
Promote live sport, entertainment, food, drinks and events effectively.
Develop relationships with local businesses, residents and community organisations.
Identify opportunities for private bookings, parties, functions and group reservations.
Work with senior management to develop the venues longer-term business plan.
WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
Previous General Manager, Deputy Manager or senior pub management experience.
Strong leadership and people-management skills.
A proven ability to drive sales and improve business performance.
Strong commercial awareness.
Understanding of labour %, stock %, margins and controllable costs.
Excellent operational standards.
Strong communication and organisational skills.
Confidence managing a busy late-night and/or high-volume operation where applicable.
Ability to recruit, develop and retain a strong team.
A proactive approach to problem solving.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and key trading periods.
A Personal Licence is desirable, or the successful candidate must be willing and eligible to obtain one.

We want a General Manager who is prepared to take ownership of the business .
You should be commercially ambitious, passionate about hospitality and comfortable being accountable for results. You will understand that great pubs are built through strong teams, excellent standards, consistent customer service and active involvement in the local community.

How can we improve? How can we increase sales? How can we improve the customer experience? How can we develop our people?
