About the role
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Fitter to join our Engineering Rail Division. This is a hands-on role focused on maintaining, repairing and modifying locomotives and rolling stock to ensure high performance, safety and reliability standards. Working within a depot environment, you'll play a key role in delivering both planned and reactive maintenance, supporting incident response and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. This is a safety-critical position requiring strong technical expertise, attention to detail and a proactive approach.
What you'll be doing
- Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance on locomotives and rolling stock
- Diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs with a strong focus on first-time fixes
- Completing major and minor repairs, along with approved modifications
- Performing functional testing and inspections before returning assets to service
- Accurately recording maintenance activities, including parts used, labour and outcomes
- Monitoring recurring faults and contributing to root cause analysis (RCA)
- Responding to incidents and providing technical support and recovery assistance
- Participating in on-call rotas and meeting response time expectations
- Ensuring compliance with all safety, depot protection and rail industry standards
- Supporting risk assessments, COSHH management and safe systems of work
- Carrying out rail movements (including shunting) where authorised
- Collaborating with colleagues, customers, suppliers and stakeholders to drive improvements
- Promoting a clean, safe and organised working environment
Training & development

- Systems training (ERP systems, SharePoint, HR systems)
- On-the-job training in maintenance management systems and technical competencies

Who we're looking for
Experience
- Experience maintaining mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Proven fault-finding and problem-solving capability, including root cause analysis
- Experience working within a rail, heavy engineering or similar environment is desirable
Knowledge
- Understanding of locomotive and/or rolling stock systems
- Knowledge of rail industry practices and safety standards
- Familiarity with maintenance processes and engineering compliance requirements
Skills & behaviours
- Strong technical skills in mechanical and/or electrical maintenance and repair
- Good digital literacy, including use of maintenance systems and MS Office tools
- Strong focus on safety, compliance and attention to detail
- Effective communication and ability to work collaboratively in team environments
- Good organisational and time management skills
- Adaptable and flexible, with willingness to work shifts and respond to incidents
- Proactive mindset with a drive for continuous improvement
- Ability to work in a safety-critical, fast-paced environment
