We are looking for an experienced Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing design function. This is a key role responsible for managing mechanical design delivery across a range of multi‑disciplinary Water Industry projects, from early scoping through detailed design and into construction support. As Lead Mechanical Designer, you will oversee the production of high‑quality engineering design packages, ensuring compliance, efficiency, and technical excellence. You will champion DFMA principles, lead a team of designers, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver industry‑leading solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of Mechanical Designers to deliver project‑specific design outputs.
  • Ensure all design work complies with WGM QA policies, procedures, and client specifications.
  • Drive the adoption of DFMA (Design for Manufacture & Assembly) and modular assembly methodologies to improve quality, reduce onsite time, and streamline fabrication.
  • Conduct site surveys and gather relevant technical data.
  • Check and approve design packages produced by the team.
  • Present designs at internal reviews and external meetings including HAZOPs and Technical Authority reviews.
  • Support Continuous Professional Development, keeping abreast of new technologies and industry advancements.
  • Identify improvements that enhance working methods, design quality, or project efficiency.
  • Promote sustainable design approaches, including waste reduction, reuse, and refurbishment.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant British Standards, WiMES guidance, and regulations including CDM, DSEAR, and Confined Space requirements.

About You

  • 3–5 years’ experience in mechanical design, ideally within engineering, construction, or the Water Industry.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience of DFMA and modular assembly.
  • The ability to embed DFMA and standardisation across project lifecycles.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with experience coordinating and mentoring design teams.
  • A collaborative approach and ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, and construction teams.
