We are seeking to recruit an experienced Metallurgist (Materials Engineer) to work within their busy plant setting within Scunthorpe. We’re looking for someone with strong numeracy skills and a solid understanding of statistical analysis, who enjoys working with data to identify trends and drive improvement. A practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving is essential, as is the ability to think critically and respond effectively to challenges.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are key to success in this role. You should be comfortable collaborating across teams, influencing decisions, and clearly presenting technical information in a structured and accessible way. A strong customer focus is also important – we need someone who can confidently represent the customer’s perspective within the Mill and help ensure we consistently meet high standards. THE ROLE
As a Metallurgist (Materials Engineer) you’ll play a key role in enhancing and validating steel rolling processes. By building a deep understanding of operations, you will work to optimise production efficiency, strengthen product quality and ensure compliance with rigorous industry standards.
You will act as the technical conscience of one of many production plants – using data to identify trends, present performance insights and drive continuous improvement. You’ll support the resolution of quality issues and develop proactive solutions that directly impact customers. This is a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. With a diverse product range and rapidly evolving market demands – particularly in the automotive sector.
You will be responsible for the approval and commissioning of new equipment to ensure our products meet the required metallurgical specifications. You'll drive operational efficiency and improvements within your area. Acting as a key figure in the manufacturing process, you will address quality issues, recommend corrective and preventative measures and contribute to data analysis to identify trends that enhance customer satisfaction and ensure compliance with quality standards.
You will develop in-depth knowledge of a wide range of products and dynamic market demands, we are looking for someone who can excel in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift quickly.
THE PERSON
- Education to degree level or equivalent in a Science or Material-based subject
- A track record of either product or process development
- An ability to challenge the effectiveness of processes and drive change in an organisation.
- Good interpersonal skills and an ability to form rapport at all levels in the business.
- Learn how to prepare samples to a high standard for metallurgical assessments.
- Work safely with chemicals and equipment at all times.
- Gain competencies in metallurgical assessments of steel products.
- Liaise with internal customers and plant contacts to understand products and processes.
- Use IT systems to record results and produce reports.
- Follow Safe Working Procedures and Quality Management Documentation.
- Participate in SHEQ activities and improvements.
- Provide an impartial testing service to our internal customers delivered with integrity.
Desirable
- Experience in the Wire or Wire Rod industry
- Knowledge of metallurgical testing methods and standards
- Experience in either an automotive industry, or a business that supports an automotive supply chain
- Understanding of IATF/TS 16949 accreditation.
