THE BUSINESS

We are seeking a full-time Design Application Engineer to join a manufacturing business based in Washington, Tyne and Wear. Our client is a circa £3M turnover business and they design & manufacture precision components used within various industries including nuclear, aerospace and renewables sectors. 60% of the client’s market is based in the US with 20% being within Europe and the remaining 20% across Asian markets.

The role involves creating and managing designs, supporting product development, and utilising computer-aided design (CAD) tools. The successful candidate will work on advanced engineering projects for high-temperature applications, collaborating with cross-functional teams and adhering to industry standards. The successful candidate will likely come from a Mechatronics background combining knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic design.

There would be the potential to attain the position of Technical Manager in the future (c2-3 years) to direct and coordinate the internal structure of the organisation based on company policies, goals, and objectives to ensure an efficient working environment and that deadlines are met consistently. The Technical professional will bridge the gap between the company’s product development, sales team and external clients.

THE ROLE

  • Dealing with customer enquiries including requirement for non-standard company products
  • Preparing general arrangement drawings and assembly/fixture drawings and bill of materials.
  • Dealing with customers, suppliers and the Business Development Manager on capacitance clearance measurement equipment to provide costing and technical advice
  • Liaise with production on orders and development of new production techniques
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) responsibilities including 3D modelling
  • Producing reports on new, old, and in progress enquiries
  • Assist Quality on investigation, authorisation and closure of product and process non-conformances
  • Be a visible, hands-on presence in the factory, supporting practical problem solving and demonstrating the company values
  • Visit customers, attend technical conferences/exhibitions to promote the business/products

THE PERSON

  • Educated to HND/BEng/MEng level in a multidisciplinary field combining mechanical, electrical/electronic and computer science systems (Mechatronics)
  • At least two years’ experience working within an engineering environment
  • Understanding thermodynamics & vibration analysis
  • Understanding how materials react with vibration, humidity and temperature
  • Understanding of software
  • Understanding of CNC machining
  • Experience of using an ERP software package
  • Ability to interpret information and produce reports
  • Demonstrable experience of using initiative and working to deadlines as well as being target driven
  • Expertise in design engineering with proficiency in use of 3D CAD, ideally Autodesk inventor
  • Understanding and interpretation of DFMEA techniques
  • IT literate with the technical ability to use hardware and software
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Good communication and team work skills
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
  • A positive attitude and is willing to learn more skills on the job
  • Confidence on the job and is happy to take on more responsibility if necessary
  • Self-motivated
  • Excellent organisational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Lateral thinker who can use own initiative to provide engineered solutions
  • Ability to talk commercially and technically depending on audience

Preferred:

  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary role
  • Experience of working within a manufacturing environment, ideally power generation or aerospace
  • Understanding of lean principles
  • Programming skills in National Instruments LabVIEW and/or C++
  • Knowledge of Linux
  • Knowledge of laser welding
