About this opportunity

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join Westmorland and Furness Council’s Technical Services team as a Senior Technical Services Officer, supporting the smooth and efficient operation of our Planning function. The Senior Technical Services Officer is responsible for overseeing the validation of planning applications, consultation, document management, and the maintenance of key records. The post holder plays a critical role in enabling timely decision‑making, maintaining transparency, and supporting high‑quality service delivery.

The Senior Technical Services Officer is responsible for providing advanced technical support to the Planning Service. Reporting to the Technical Services team leader, you’ll ensure that applications are validated and processed accurately and efficiently whilst playing a key part in delivering excellent customer service. This role acts as a key support figure within the team, handling complex tasks, assisting junior colleagues, and ensuring high‑quality service delivery, including support with finance and planning appeals. The Senior Technical Services Officer helps streamline workflows, maintain compliance with regulatory standards, and fosters a collaborative environment within Technical Services. This is a varied and rewarding role for someone who enjoys working in a detail‑oriented, fast‑paced environment and takes pride in delivering excellent customer service. You’ll be part of a supportive and collaborative team committed to helping shape the growth and development of Westmorland and Furness.

We’re seeking a highly organised and proactive individual with experience in technical support and Planning validation. You’ll bring:

  • Strong technical and administrative skills, with experience handling complex planning applications, data and case management tasks.

  • Ability to interpret legislation, calculate planning application fees and administer financial aspects of the process.
