About this opportunity
Westmorland and Furness Council is seeking a Senior Manager in our Environmental Services department to take an active strategic leadership role in the delivery and transformation of a wide range of environmental services. This role ensures the efficient and sustainable delivery of key service areas including grounds maintenance contract management, arboriculture, and the Lake Warden Service, alongside other environmental functions.
As a member of the Thriving Places Management Team, you will contribute to shaping and developing a high-performing, empowered Council that delivers excellent services to residents and communities. You will advise Members and officers on relevant policies and ensure the service complies with legislation.
You will manage and optimise an ÂŁ8 million budget, identify income generation and efficiency opportunities, and support the development and implementation of Environmental Services strategies and policies aligned with Council priorities. Inspiring and developing functional leaders and staff, you will foster a culture that enables teams to perform at their best while attracting and retaining talent.
In addition, you will monitor developments in the environmental services landscape, promoting innovative approaches and challenging current thinking to improve outcomes for communities. A strong commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing is essential.
Who we are looking for…
You will hold a relevant degree or NVQ Level 5 (or equivalent) and be a member of a professional body. A strong understanding of political processes and Council structures is essential in a changing environment.
You will have strategic knowledge of grounds maintenance, arboriculture, asset management, project and risk management, and contract management. Extensive leadership experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and complex programmes is required. You’ll have proven financial management skills and the ability to communicate and influence senior stakeholders, partners, and elected Members effectively.
