Overview

Westminster Abbey is a living church, a treasured part of Britain’s heritage and an architectural masterpiece within a World Heritage Site. The Abbey plays a central role in national events and attracts over 1.5 million worshippers and visitors each year. The Deputy Clerk of the Works is a key role within the Abbey’s Works Department, responsible for the maintenance, conservation and development of significant restoration and development projects, while ensuring high standards of quality and sustainability.

Responsibilities

The Deputy Clerk of the Works will:

  • work with and occasionally deputise for the Clerk of the Works (CotW) to maintain the fabric, plant, precincts and overall environment of the Abbey to high standards;
  • manage disciplined programmes and processes, and provide creative input to shape the future of a site of national and international importance;
  • lead or contribute to significant restoration and development projects, coordinating with internal teams and external partners;
  • build effective relationships within the Works team, across the Abbey and with key external partners.

Qualifications & Experience

We are seeking an experienced and qualified professional recognized for expertise in the maintenance, conservation and development of highly complex listed buildings. You will have:

  • extensive knowledge of the key trades and building methodologies;
  • a strong grasp of current best practice, systems and standards;
  • ability to manage operations practically, with people management and excellent communication skills.

Details

Salary: £75,000 per annum, dependent on experience. Salary is paid on the last Friday of each month and reviewed annually.

Working Hours: 40 hours per week. Normal hours are 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, with additional hours as required by the needs of the organisation.

Annual Holidays: 33 days per annum, including recognised public holidays, for full-time staff.

Training: On-site training provided in all aspects of the job. Additional training needs assessed through probation and annual appraisals.

Pension Scheme & Life Assurance: Group Personal Pension with employee contribution from 3% and employer contribution up to 9% (depending on employee contribution). Auto-enrollment after 3 months if eligible. Death-in-service life assurance for all employees, whether or not they join the pension scheme.

Staff Discount: 20% discount at Westminster Abbey shop and 30% discount at Benugo outlets for staff purchases.

Season Ticket Loan: Available after probation, repayable over 10 months.

Medical Insurance: The Abbey pays 50% of premiums to join a nominated medical insurance scheme after one year of employment.

Uniform: Uniform and/or PPE provided must be worn at all times.
