The Role
Westmann Contracts Ltd is looking for an experienced Working Site Lead with a strong background in joinery, carpentry or general building.
Our office and workshop are located in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire.
The successful candidate will attend the workshop when required to collect vehicles, materials, tools and equipment before travelling to project locations.
Our work is carried out at commercial and corporate sites throughout the UK, with the location varying depending on current projects.
A significant proportion of our work is currently located in Cheshire and may involve daily travel from the North West.
Other projects may require nationwide travel and occasional overnight stays.
This is a hands-on position.
You will remain on the tools, working alongside the site team, while also taking responsibility for the day-to-day organisation and delivery of small works, refurbishment and maintenance projects.
You will lead by example, allocate work, maintain high standards and ensure projects are completed safely, professionally and efficiently.
This is not a traditional Site Manager role focused mainly on supervision and paperwork.
We are looking for an experienced tradesperson who still wants to work practically while taking ownership of the site and the people working on it.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out joinery, carpentry, building and refurbishment works.
- Lead, supervise and motivate employed operatives and labour-only subcontractors.
- Allocate daily tasks and manage site activities.
- Ensure works are completed safely, correctly and to a high standard.
- Challenge poor workmanship, unsafe behaviour and unacceptable conduct.
- Coordinate labour, materials, tools and deliveries.
- Read drawings, specifications and project information.
- Liaise professionally with clients, building occupants and other contractors.
- Complete site records and report progress, delays and variations.
- Support the Project Manager or Contracts Manager with project delivery.
Skills and Experience Required
- Strong practical background in joinery, carpentry or general building.
- Experience leading or supervising small site teams.
- Experience delivering refurbishment, maintenance or small works projects.
- Experience working within occupied commercial environments.
- Comfortable remaining on the tools while leading a team.
- Strong knowledge of construction health and safety.
- Ability to organise labour, materials and programmes.
- Professional and confident communicator.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel nationwide and stay away when required.
- SSSTS or SMSTS, or willingness to obtain this promptly.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- CSCS Gold Card.
- First Aid at Work.
- Asbestos Awareness, PASMA or IPAF.
- About Westmann Contracts
Westmann Contracts Ltd delivers refurbishment, maintenance, construction and small works projects throughout the UK.
Our clients operate within commercial and corporate environments where professionalism, communication, quality and health and safety are essential.
Our projects are generally small works rather than major construction schemes.
The role therefore requires someone practical, flexible and capable of leading a team while also contributing directly to the works.
The successful candidate will be expected to set the standard on site, take ownership of the project and ensure that issues are addressed rather than continually passed upwards.
What We Offer
- Competitive pay based on experience.
- Company vehicle and fuel card.
- Paid door-to-door travel and overtime opportunities.
- 22 days’ holiday plus 8 bank holidays increasing to 25 days plus 8 bank holidays with length of service.
- Training and professional development.
- Varied projects across commercial and corporate environments.
- Ideal Candidate
This role would suit an experienced joiner, carpenter, builder, working foreman or site supervisor who enjoys working on the tools but is also confident leading people, organising projects and taking responsibility for standards on site.
Applicants looking for a management-only position should note that practical work remains a key and essential part of this role
