To provide a high-quality phlebotomy service to patients registered at Westlands Medical Centre by safely and efficiently collecting blood samples for investigation, diagnosis, and monitoring. The post holder will deliver compassionate, patient‑centred care and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the clinical team.
Job responsibilities
- Undertake venepuncture and capillary blood sampling in line with agreed clinical protocols and best practice.
- Correctly identify patients and obtain informed consent prior to all procedures.
- Accurately label, handle, store, and prepare blood specimens for laboratory collection.
- Recognise, manage, and appropriately respond to complications of venepuncture (e.g. fainting, bruising, bleeding).
- Provide reassurance and clear explanations, particularly to anxious, elderly, or vulnerable patients.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well‑organised clinical and treatment area at all times.
- Record all procedures accurately and promptly on the clinical system (EMIS).
- Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with data protection legislation and Caldicott principles.
- Monitor, maintain, and order stock levels of phlebotomy equipment and consumables.
- Comply with all Westlands Medical Centre policies, procedures, and clinical governance requirements.
- Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, and administrative staff to ensure high standards of patient care.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control policies at all times.
- Dispose of clinical waste and sharps safely and in accordance with national and local guidelines.
- Follow health and safety legislation, COSHH regulations, and practice risk management procedures.
